So I have just returned from a beautiful 3 day weekend in Austria!! We spent a day and a half each at Vienna and in Salzburg. I went with my friends Melissa and Madison. Our overnight bus was soo long Thursday night and I didn't get much sleep at all. When we arrived in Vienna on Friday morning, it was soo cold! We got ready and went on a walking tour of the city. We took a tram around the Ringstrasse, which is where all of Vienna's main sights are located. Then we went the Gulasch museum cafe (see pictures) to eat lunch but I actually got Weiner Schnitzel (sooo good!! It was a lot like an Acme pork Tenderloin actually, with german potato salad...yum!) We walked around Vienna the rest of the day visiting Parlaiment, St. Stephen's Cathedral, Burgtheater and Rathaus. We took a tour of the Hofburg Palace, where the Hapsburg dynasty lived. Then we got stuck in the middle of a torrential downpour...in a park with no trees...it was miserable. Once the rain stopped, we made our way to the Rathaus, or Town Hall. In front, there was a Christkindl Mart or Christmas Market that sold hot wine, pretzels and ornaments. The lights were so beautiful and the hot wine wasn't so bad either! Being so exhausted, we grabbed a quick apfelstrudel and hot chocolate for dinner and hit the sack.....we had planned to go out that night but slept all the way until morning!
The next morning, we got around and took the Metro (impeccibly clean) to the Schloss Schonbrunn Palace or the summer palace of the Hapsburg dynasty. the palace and gardens were a lot like Versailles. We took a tour of the rooms, which were beautiful and then walked through the gardens. The Schonbrunn has been one of my favorite places in Europe. Then we got lunch consisting of Cocotorte (chocolate and coconut cream cake) and Truffletorte (chocolate cake and truffle cake) and hot chocolate for lunch (SO Healthy!!) Then we boarded our bus to go to Salzburg! By that time, it had began to snow in Vienna and it was so beautiful!
After a 4 hour bus ride we arrived in Vienna. The snow was coming down and the air was soo chilly! The small town was all decked out with Christmas lights and was so quaint. We walked around the Old Square and then looked all over for a resturant open for dinner. To our dismay the only place we could find was an Italian restuarant (I know right!?) so we ate there. Then I went to bed because we had an early morning tour to get up for!
The next morning I got up bright and early to go on the Official Sound of Music Tour! We took a bus to all of the outdoor locations in Salzburg the movie was filmed. We saw the gazebo that Sixteen going on Seventeen was filmed at, the front and back of the von Trapp home, the road where Maria sang I have Confidence!! (Where i got a really great pic!) and so much more. You will have to look in my album for all of the photo reenactments! Then we had a satisfying lunch of chicken noodle soup, apfelstrudel with hot vanilla cream and hot chocolate!!! YUUMMM Austrian food was definitly my favorite! After the tour was over, we frequented some of Salzburg's Christkindl Marts and then boarded the bus to go home to Florence! We of course watched The Sound of Music on the way back!!
I had an Amazing time in the beautiful country of Austria and anyone who is visiting europe should definitly visit one or both of these beautiful cities!!! Now Im home for Thanksgiving weekend! Buon Giorno del Tacchino!!!!
