Last stop on the tour - Shanghai. I've been here a few hours now. First impressions? Er - can I go back to Beijing please??
I went out for not much more than an hour, and got hassled nearly every step of the way. For the benefit of all the kind people who stopped to talk to me: NO! I don't want a camera, an iphone, a t-shirt, a bag, to have coffee with you, to help you with your English, you to walk with me, I don't want to tell you how I am, where I'm from or where I'm going. I don't want your detachable wheels for my shoes - oh hang on, they might come in handy actually - is a rolling western wallet a less attractive target than a walking western wallet....?
Going into a department store for respite only made it worse, as people now assumed that I definitely wanted something. LEAVE ME ALONE! Gah - maybe I'm just ready to come home but I don't have the patience for it right now. Any tips from anyone who's been here - are there any areas where it doesn't happen?
Not that Beijing is perfect - far from it. I went out to the Olympic Stadium, which was impressive - but almost invisible in the smog. It was a boiling hot day, but visibility was terrible in this horrible yellow fug. Going to the airport today was the same. If this is pollution, then where do I sign up to save the planet? And on that subject - does anyone know of any good carbon-offsetting schemes so that I can attempt to neutralise all of my travels?
I've been thinking more about coming home, and have had a couple of further thoughts on some business ideas. One is a physical product with an ipod app offshoot, and one is a purely web-based idea but with potential for Facebook etc. If anyone knows any developers who would be prepared to work on any of these for very cheap (free?) rates and punt on making some money in the future, please let me know....
It looks on this PC screen as though commas are appearing as full stops, so if my punctuation looks abysmal, you'll have to forgive me.
Not sure what my plans are for this evening - I did well to grab this PC when I did, there are only 2 for the hostel, so I'm loathe to let it go! I'm also reluctant to go and spens the night out in Shanghai on my own - I might have an early night and try to beat the crowds tomorrow morning instead.
Hope this doesn't sound too miserable - the business ideas are the yin to my moaning yang, and I think as far as ths trip goes, it's just my time, it's just my time.
