Josie's Giant Adventure
G'day
I am currently in Cairns but flying over to Darwin this afternoon for my last stop in Australia. I fly to Singapore on the 6th March.
My last night on Magnetic Island turned out to be a bit of a big one when the blokes in my dorm decided we were having a 14 party. Room 14, 14 people, 14 bags of goon, starting at 1400, with 14 party games and all to be finished within 14 minutes. Well, the first 2 were true. We got told off by the hostel owners and had to carry the party on in the bar. I have since bumped into 2 sets of people from the 14 party and one of them had been talking to some complete strangers 100s of kms away from where the 14 party took place and the people had heard about it even though they hadn't been there. The 14 party is famous, let me know if you hear about it.
After the 14 party I spent a day on a bus driving up to Cairns. We drove through loads of banana plantations and tropical forest and was v pretty. It also rained a lot which shouldn't be too surprising given its the rainy season up here and we were driving through rain forest, although I thought it never rained in Australia so I was a bit surprised. I had a quiet night in Cairns then headed up to Cape Tribulation which I loved. On the way we stopped on the Daintree River to spot Crocodiles. We saw a baby, a mum sitting on a nest and a big daddy who was about 5 or 6 feet long. It was amazing to actually see them in the wild. Its pretty scary too. There are signs everywhere saying not to go to near the water and not to swim as you could well get eaten.
Up at Cape Tribulation I did jungle surfing through the rain forest where you are in a harness and go swinging on wires through the tree tops over 20 meters above the forest floor. It was really cool although I was first in my group so it was the most scary for me as I didn't know what was coming. In the evening we went to the beach and it was totally stunning as the sun set. The rain forest goes right up to the beach so its really beautiful and tropical. Its also very deserted, perhaps as you can't swim in the sea because of killer jelly fish and sharks. Being the only people on the beach made it all the more special. In the morning my friend Barbara and I walked through the rain forest on our own to a water hole to swim. On the way I came face to face with the most scary spider I've ever seen. It had spun a web accross the path we were walking along, and I only just saw it in time before it would have been literally on my face. Extremely scary horror movie type stuff. We had to crawl underneath its web. When we got to the water hole we were feeling really scared and although we knew there weren't crocodiles there, it took us ages to get the courage to get in. Once we did it was beautiful though.
Back in Cairns I had a large night out at the renound Woolshed where I bumped into the 14 party people again. Then I went on a boat trip to snorkell on the Great Barrier Reef. The coral and fish were amazing, but I didn't see any sharks or turtles which was a shame. It was also quite hard work as the sea was rough and there were quite a few people in my group so I kept getting kicked in the face by the flippers of oblivious people.
Right, I'm off to pick up my underwater photos to find out if I just took 27 pictures of blue sea or whether I got some cool tropical fish shots, then I'll try to upload my latest photos, then off to Darwin.
See you in a bit
