We left dilsen-stokkem on Saturday morning and set out for Liege. It was another nice drive without too much hassle. The strange thing about Belgium and Netherlands driving, is that in between a lot of villages and towns, it never feels like youve left the previous town, before arriving at the next, because all of the roads are lined with houses. In England, you know when you've left a village, because the houses stop. But they just carry on here, one house deep, all the way to the next village. which is unfortunate when you're in search of a scenic drive. but then its still better than a motorway!
On the way in, I was starting to worry that Liege wasn't the historic town we were hoping to visit, as Becci had pointed out the road we were on looked pretty grubby and run down. We parked on a steep hill a few minutes walk from where we'd guessed the centre of town was. It still looked a bit grotty as we walked in, but we turned the corner to see beautiful palace (palace of the prince bishop) and the centre looked quite nice and old. It was lunch time, so we wandered around looking for some supposedly amazing belgian frites (chips) to go with our cheese and salami sandwiches we'd packed. But the only places we could find that served frites to take away were greasy kebab places, and BK said that they weren't the style we were looking for. We gave up and ate our sandwiches after about an hour. The city had character which is all we were really hoping for. We stumbled upon some famous steps. We couldn't get close for a while as a girl in a high vis informed us there was a film crew shooting for a movie of some sort half way up them. They were massive. One huge long steep stone staircase going up and up (374 steps it says in our city guide thing). Becci joked that if Andy and Tim were here, they'd almost certainly race up them. Which I thought was a great idea and asked her if she fancied it. Her mouth gave a simple "Nope". Her eyes said "you're having a f***ing laugh!!" We only spent a 2 or 3 hours in the town, but i think we saw most of the main sights. So at about 4 oclock we hopped back in Lynn and headed for Eupen, our next Camperstop.
