Helllooo everyone, how is everybody??
I've had such a good week this week. I've been pretty much joined at the hip with another volunteer-Gemma, who has been organising a sports day for 700 children at the school she's been teaching at. She's probably the scattiest person I've ever met so I've been her right hand woman and have been helping her get everything organised. We worked so hard all week, we had so many tedious jobs to do including cutting out 700 pieces of card so we could pin them on the children to tell which teams they're in. And then we had to attach saefty pins to all of them, which took a very long time!
I've also had loads of time to get to know all the children, Gemma has a little crew that follow her round. They don't speak very much English, so when I was introduced to them they just say "Beckham?" "Rooney?". They're all very sweet and friendly, all the children that come here are relatively well off so it hasn't been sad because they are all so happy!
I did go to the NCP on tuesday which is a children's point run by volunteers for children who can't afford to go to school. That was very sad, because a lot of the children didn't have shoes and all their clothes are dirty and ripped. It was really obvious which children had HIV and lots of the children had marks over their bodies where they'd been abused. But these children looked really happy as well, we took them to a sports day organised by a different group of volunteers and they had a really good time.
The NCP sports day was not as chaotic as our sports day on friday! It was so good though and it all turned out OK and ran quite smoothly! We decided to have 6 races that each grade would race in and we did it in the style of a relay so that the one whole grade would be running in one race. I was in charge of the egg and spoon race and trying to explain to 7 year olds who don't speak english very well that they have to run with the egg and spoon and then pass it to another person in their team was pretty much impossible. One boy was just running round the racing track holding the egg in one hand and the spoon in the other pretending to be an aeroplane! I tried to tell them to sit down when they had raced so I could tell when the last one had run, instead they would just join the back of the queue and race again so it was a never ending race! It was such a funny day, I don't think I've laughed so much in a long time!
I hope everyone is OK and looking forward to christmas!
See ya xxxx
