Hey everyone!
I'm back from Songimvelo game reserve where I've been for two weeks with two other volunteers. We were the first volunteers to go there so when we arrived there were tins of paint for us to paint the whole house with and cleaning equipment for us to clean the whole house and make it livable in. It wasn't fun. Aswell as cleaning and painting a whole house, we had to go on random searches for lizards so we could take pictures of them and build an atlas of the types of lizards found at this game reserve. That was also slightly dull. We had to walk around quite a large area and look under every rock and look up every tree. I didn't find any lizards, but thats probably because I didn't look very hard. Also, I was pretty scared about the possibility of finding a Black mamba, the most dangerous snake in Africa, which would definitely kill me if I accidentally poked it with my massive stick (my chosen searching tool). My searching method involved finding the biggest rock so I could hide behind it from the rest of the group for an hour and listen to my iPod, lazy I know but effective in passing the time. And also I got to appreciate the amazing views whilst chilling behind a big rock. Songimvelo is very hilly and so the views are very pretty!
In the second week we did a bit more hiking which was interesting. I've realised how unfit I am! We had Tommy the botanist with us so he was taking us to some places to show us some endangered plants-lucky us! The first hike we did wasn't too bad, the hill was quite steep but I managed to get to the top no problem. The second one we did I nearly died. It was basically a vertical slope that we had to walk/rock climb up. When we got to the top Tommy the botanist said we had to walk down the other side and then back up again. There was no way I was going to do that so I said that I had altitude sickness and I stayed at the top. I'm so rubbish. Georgiana (another volunteer) said she would stay with me because she's also rubbish at hiking and so we had another chance to appreciate some different views.
So now I'm back at the All Out lodge and I've decided to change from conservation to working in an orphanage for the rest of my stay. Hopefully that will be good.
I hope everyone's OK
