Hello everybody,
I'm now a certified scuba diver! I met up with my mate Tom from London and his girlfriend Ania on Ko Tao and we started our 4 day open water dive course with Scuba Shack. We were staying on Chalok Baan Kao Bay, hands down the greatest beach I've stayed on so far. It is so chilled, with gorgeous water and loads of discreet bars and restaurants jutting out over the water. After some theory (boring) we finally hit the water. They don't ease you in in a swimming pool with Scuba Shack, they throw you straight in the sea. Diving is such a great sensation, they teach you loads of skills underwater such as removing your breathing regulator, filling your mask with water and then clearing it and doing lots of emergency ascents. Once we mastered the skills, our Austrian instructor took us on several open water dives. The coral was fantastic, we saw sea urchins, angle fish and butterfly fish. Our final dive was to just shy of 18 metres and was the best of the bunch. They did take us diving to Shark Bay (note the name) at 5pm when the sharks feed (note the time), but unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your death wish) we didn't see any...
If anyone's ever thought of doing diving, do it! It's such a great experience, despite the fact we had to do an exam at the end of it (my vow to never do another exam has been broken.)
I left Tom and Ania and am now in Krabi after a mission of a journey involving 3 buses and 2 ferries (the first of which rendered me sea sick for an hour. Lovely!) I'm now fully recovered though after a guy gave me some anti-sea sick pills. A few days in Krabi and then I'm off to Ko Phi Phi. The diving there is meant to be very very good...
Hope everyone's on good form.
