Hello from Kompong Cham!!
Our bus journey from Phnom Penh was only a few hours long. We did have a stop half way where we got to see lots of deep fried tarantulas being sold as snacks!! What was even worse was watching people eat them, gaaaads!! There was a little boy sitting next to us that asked his mum for some money and ran out to buy a bag of crickets and started munching into them, we have read that they are a nice salty snack a bit like peanuts but I think its safe to say neither of us will be trying them!! It was midday by the time we arrived and we were greeted by a friendly tuk-tuk driver that said he would help us find a hotel for $1, so he took us to a few and finally found a decent place, although with no hot water. Sure we can survive one night though.
We decided not to waste the day so dumped the bags and set off to see some of the sights. Our tuk-tuk driver took us to the nearby “women and man hills” which we read you get some good views of the town. We went to the man hill first being the smaller of the two (obviously haha) but B didnt make it to the top as there were pretty big monkeys everywhere. After the India incident B isn’t the biggest fans of monkeys, so J went up to take a look. He said it was good but nothing special. We then took a walk around a temple at the bottom where we were bombarded with kids asking for some money and wanting to talk to us.
Next stop was the women hill, which had a heap of stairs to climb and yet again it was a blistering heat. Half way up we decided to take a water break and noticed a snake just a meter away from us. Not sure what type it was but it had a yellowish sort of head and darker body, luckily it wasn’t interested in us and just slithered off. At the top of the hill it was a nice view of the town, we took a couple of snaps and were on our way.
We said goodbye to our nice tuk-tuk driver and rented two bicycles and cycled to the nearby ferry port where you could take a short ferry ride over to an island on the Mekong River. The ferry journey was amusing. It was pretty small but they still managed to fit about 10 bicycles, 10 mopeds, a car and two cows on-board. The island was really nice, it was a very local village with a big dirt track right down the middle. We must have said hello a million times, all the little kids would chase after us giving us high fives, it was pretty cool.
We arrived back on mainland just in time as a thunderstorm broke out. When it finally stopped raining we set out for some food. We tried some more local dishes which were again really good. It was another early night as we were up bright and early for our journey to Siem Reap.
Kompong Cham was a nice little stop, it reminded us of a few of the smaller towns we visited in Vietnam, nice and peaceful.
Next stop.....Siem Reap for some temples.
Until then.....
