Day 81 (Friday 5th January 2007)
We left the wonderful 'Prom' early and began our long drive up to the Snowy River. A supposed 3-hour 53-minute journey turned into an all day affair...good job it was only 36*C then!!
We stopped at Sale to buy some things (running out of chicken soup)...unfortunately no one actually had a sale on! We bought a fridge (cooler box and ice) or an 'esky' as they like to call them over here. Marc has affectionately named ours Emile, but apparently this one stands up a lot easier!!!!
On our travels we drove along the 'Great Alpine Road' (never heard of that one before). However, they should have named it the Great Smokey Road, what with the smoke of half of the state of Victoria (which essentially is one big bush fire right now) wafting all around us!
After several hours we found the town of Buchan ok, then amazingly got lost by following signs to Snowy River National Park (work that one out), when we should have continued up to Killops Bridge. As well as crossing some very precarious wooden bridges and dodging a herd of sheep, casually running down the road, we somehow ended up in Orbost!
Some dude, a real Alf Stewart type, at a campsite there told us of a quiet place where we could have a free camp for the night, 30-minutes up the river. It was an extremely bumpy road and when we got there it was a nice quiet spot. That is except for some weird, creepy guy alone in his car (proper Wolf Creek stuff)!!
After staring over at us for a while he came over to tell us the car was smoking a bit (proper Wolf Creek Stuff!!) Sick with worry, Sarah made Marc go back up where he was to check him out, making up some elaborate story about us needing candles and stuffing a kitchen knife into his pocket!!
Turned out he was a genuine good old Aussie bloke with his pregnant missus sitting in a camp chair. He even gave us some batteries to solve the whole made up candles problem!!
The noise of the forest was incredible and just as we were settling down for the night a massive boo-book flew down onto the floor right in front of us...amazing!! The possums wouldn't let us get much sleep that night we can tell you!
