Day 82 (Saturday 6th January 2007)
With the river nothing more than a large puddle, we decided to leave the Snowy River and head for Sydney. We hit the Princes Highway north along the Australian east coast, leaving Victoria behind and stepping into our third state, New South Wales.
Victoria was great, but the bush fires are out of control. We got held up for a while leaving the state as roads were being closed off and the smoke clouded the highway.
Sydney proved to be a distance too far, so we just drove and drove until we hit Batemans Bay. Whilst driving in, Marc got pulled over for a random breath test. The officer asked Marc to count to ten, but stopped him half way through. "Into the bottle mate" he said...Marc merrily counting away to himself!
The campsites around Batemans Bay were charging anything from $40 a night, so we told them to do a 'Michael Jackson' and headed a further 20-odd kms north to the Murramarang National Park. The 'Pebble Beach' campsite within the park turned out to be fully booked, so with no option left to take, we whacked up our tent at a rest area on the outskirts of the park, just off the Princes Highway.
It had pretty much everything we needed, except for a shower...not bad though for our second freebie in a row!
