After a night bus from the big village known as Adelaide, we arrived in Melbourne (about 10-11 hrs) which wasnt too bad to bad a journey as got to sleep a bit. Wondered around a bit and checked into a big hostel. Grabbed some breakfast and headed out to see some of the sights. Both feeling a bit tuckered out, we took the first day slowly, getting a free tourist bus around the city, this saved the big effort of walking.
We set out searching the internet for places to rent for a few months, and jobs for the pair of us - this turned out to be alot harder than i first planned. The city is covered in tram lines, which although looks a bit strange seeing cables literally everywhere, made ithe entire city and it suburbs easily accessable. We discovered that buying 1 ticket, but only validating it on the tram when a conductor appeared, would save us alot of money - he never did thus we've only bought 1 ticket each. We rode the trams for hours on end looking in loads of suburbs for appropriate places. Found nice suburbs but all these turned out to be out of our pricerange, seemed we were destined for the ghetto. Not happy with this, with no outcome in the job search we agreed to spend some time looking at the city, but would head on upto sydney for a more permanent stay.
We went to the citys 'old' jail, which was actually still in use until '94. Not a nice place to say the least, melbournes first prison, opened early 1900s. We got to see where people were hung from, and the actual ropes used for the job, the rations they were given when in prison, and face casts of every person hung there along with their crimes. This was also the final place for Bush ranger Ned Kelly, australian outlaw/folk hero. A Robin hood character who stole from the rich......and kept for himself - some reason a peoples hero though.
Then headed to the holy of holys - THE NEIGHBOURS TOUR!!!! Much to my delight. Started the tour by meeting 'Jenelle timmons', shame it wasnt one of the more striking actresses, but none the less. Then headed off on the official tour bus to ramsey street - here i was in my element. The street is much smaller than it looks on screen, although actually has another house you never see, and a very big one overlooking the street which is also kept out of shot.
Spent a day at St.Kilda beach, melbournes 'place to be seen', couple of topless ladies which got a cheer from me - not hannah though. Unfortunatly the rest of the beach that day was a bit of a sausage fest, so hannah got more enjoyment from the day than myself - but we did play in the sand :-)
Weather in Melbourne bit irratic - sunny, shorts and t-shirts in morning, raining at lunch time, jeans and jumper in afternoon. This aparantly is what melbourne is renouned for, but didnt think it be as extreme as it is. After 10 days in this nice city, it didnt quite have enough to keep us, so jumped on another night bus to whisk us away, and awake in Sydney......
