European Adventure 2017
We set our GPS units and headed off to Omaha Beach which was where the US military landed on D Day June 6th 1944 with the loss of 9000 lives. As the celebrations fir the anniversary of this event has just past there are still hundreds of flags flying in the area which makes it all the more special. We visited the memorial and cemetery along with the museum and video footage which took half a day. It was extremely moving. There were staggering statistics such as the Allied forces moved 146000 tanks and wheeled vehicles across the channel for the assault. It's difficult to comprehend today what happened back then just 70 years ago. After a very sobering morning we headed off to Bayeux where the 70 Metre tapestry of the battle of Hastings which occurred in1066 is displayed. We wandered slowly along the length of the artwork listening to an audio recording explaining the story before us. Very interesting and amazing how well it has been preserved. It is amazing how William the Conquorer transported troops food and horses across the Channel in little more than over sized row boats to overthrow the then King of England to claim the crown. The town of Bayeux itself was very pretty and one of the few locally to avoid war damage. The streets are pretty much just as they were and with the flags out for D Day it looked really lovely. With still nearly two hours to travel to our next destination and the day rapidly disappearing we hit the motorway network. One of our team leading the convoy missed counting an exit at one of the many roundabouts. Two of us carried on and found ourselves doing between 100 to 120 kph with no where to stop with a view of the motorway for 40kms. It took 15 mins for our lost traveler to eventually find the motorway again and we regrouped at the next destination, la Mont St Michel. This stunning place is an abbey and a township built on a small island in the 8th Century. As we had spent too much time at the other attractions we had the benefit of less crowds but unfortunately we were unable to access the Abbey itself. It is a unique place and really would have benefitted from more time spent t here but at least we did get there and is was fantastic. Our accommodation for the night was a further 40 minutes or so so off we went again and found our lovely caravan park with all mod cons so that we could do washing and have decent washes or showers. There was a restaurant outside the gate and so we decided to have our first dinner out together. During the meal the stories came out and it was decided there should be a penalty system imposed for indiscretions. The penalty payments would fund the final party! We all admitted to being on the wrong side of the road albeit momentarily but Leicester admitted a great transgression when he mentioned he went around a roundabout the wrong way! The whiskey bottle came out for that one! And he was also the one who took the wrong turn that day! The RTs are fantastic and have proved their worth on many many occasions even if it is to say to the one in front that their vent has been left up only to have the person behind say the same about theirs to them. Onwards again today and then the pace may slow but it has been fantastic so far. The weather looks a bit better today, there is just a cool breeze but at least there is sun.
