European Adventure 2017
Another hot day was brewing when we left Jean-luc's vineyard and headed for the first of two Chateaux. The first one we aimed for was about an hour away at Azay-Le-Rideau and was a smaller one than the three 'must see' chateaux of the region. It was filled with elegant renaissance furniture and the build itself was in the renaissance style. It had a very chequered history as we learnt from the audio we followed as we walked around. We bought local bread and made lunch before heading off to the first of the Big Three, Chenonceau which I found more interesting. It is also surrounded by water and actually straddles the River Cher which during the Second World War was the demarcation point. As the chateaux reached both sides of the river it was used to move people from the Resistance movement across. Back it the 16th century King Louis the XlV had stayed there and there is a room dedicated to him in the chateaux. As the temperature had climbed to 32 we didn't spend much more time in the gardens, long enough though for Charlie and Geoff to spot several large fish in the river. Heading back to the Motorhomes Lidka and Leicester ( who didn't come through the Chateaux as they has seen it before ) met us and told us of the options they had sorted for parking up for the night. The first was very close and had power and water and showers etc so we opted for that. We were the only ones there for quite some time and when the first train rolled past we thought we probably knew why! It was shades of Rakaia for us but instead of the train being 500metres away this time it was only 10metres!! And they kept coming through the night AND they were going fast AND they were noisy!! Still it's all part of the experience.
