I am writing this at 7am on my last day at campfire safaris, it is blazing sunshine and already hot. It is hard to believe how fast the last four weeks have gone and that I am going to the airport in a few hours time to start the next part of my trip.I went on another trip into the Kruger national reserve which is over 2 million hectares in size and was not disappointed with the wildlife that I saw. The highlight was seeing the hyena walk past a matter of feet away and go to a lion kill from the previous day and walk off with a leg of zebra, it did this twice and the came back to chew on the remaining bones. The lions after having had a good meal were sitting in the bushes about 100 meters away. We had been looking for rhino all day and about 20 minute from leaving I spotted 3 hidden in the bushes. The other animal that I wanted to see but did not was the leopard but apart from that the whole experience was brilliant and I would recommend anyone to visit the Kruger.
I have been able to use the pick up at campfire and as there were only 3 of us left have got out and about in it. We went for dinner on Friday and had a game platter which included Impala, kudu, buffalo, wildebeest, nyala and one other that I cannot remember. We cooked the meat ourselves on a hotplate on the table and enjoyed it all. Including drinks and a big fat dessert we felt guilty that the whole meal only came to eighteen pounds for the 3 of us. The next night was just as good a curry and drinks for eight pounds for 3.
Last night the 3 of us went for a drive in the bush (it is safe as long as you do not get out of your vehicle) and came across 2 male lions a female and 3 young lions. They were playing in the grass oblivious to us who were watching in amazement. We were forced to leave as we were being engulfed in hundreds of bugs attracted by the search light. On the way back to camp we saw something in the bush and stopped the truck, when I shone the light I nearly jumped out of the truck..we had stopped next to a lone buffalo which was facing us no more than 5 foot away. As a lone buffalo is one of the most dangerous animals to come across we quickly drove off.
I am going to pack now and will see you all in Kuala Lumpur where I will be working in Zoo Negara the national zoo of KL.
Farewell from South Africa
John.
PS Rosie I hope that your broken wrist gets better soon xxxx
