John here again for one of my all too infrequent entries. Today was magical!
After an early morning Facetime call to my 8 yo niece (whom I woke at 2 AM her time -- oops!) Wini and I went to Versaille.
Now, life isn't that straightforward, and this weekend only the train only went half way. But lucky for us, someone who could read French figured it out and told us to wait for the 171 bus.
Waiting ... waiting ... I'm like a computer booting from casette tape - nothing is happening ...
The 171 doesn't come here says another bus driver. So a "local" marches about 20 of us across town to the SNCF train station. Which is closed. She is now confused, but a charming young lad helps her walk us the rest of the way across town. Amazingly we actually end up at a 171 bus stop and get a ride to Versaille. No update on whether the boy got the girl's phone number, but I'd say his odds were good.
After all this: Versaille is up there with the Louvre is "must see" place. From the bed chambers of King Louis XIV and Marie Antoinette, to the Hall of Mirrors, to the Hall of Battles, to the miles of garden mazes. This has to be one of the most ornate places I have ever been. On top of that the audio guide gave us a brief history review a painting of the first king to unite France and a statue of Charelemange himself! It's been a rare moment in my life when I have enjoyed a place so much.
Look at the photos and just know: Wini and I have danced in this palace. What did you do with your day?
Wini also bought alot of stuff.
