Well Guys
I left the lights in Melbourne and set off along the Great Ocean Road with 2 English Girls, Sim and Natasha (London) and Tobi from Germany. Met Natasha and Sim through a website where I placed an advert looking for a ride and Tobi through an advert in a hostel. They seemed a nice bunch of people so gave them the thumbs up and off we went! Much cheaper than a tour and more personal.
What a fantastic five days we have had driving along the Great Ocean Road in our sporty number Toyota we hired. Such a cool car. Brand spanking new. Now who on earth would trust me with this thing, he he! It was massive had to be to carry us and our bags, especially mine it is like a small child has grown again in size. I am def not a backpacker who likes to do things by halves. No not me, I have everything in my bag from 12 tops to hair straightners. I keep picking up stuff along the way. Well you need your luxuries in life I say.
Was so great to get behind the wheels of a car again especially with the amazing views that we had. We drove Tobi mad with our constant chatting and the odd pause to breathe. By the end of the trip he had got used to us girls. Poor Tobi kept having to wait on us when we showered, straightened our hair and took an hour to go to the toilet. His favourite phase was " You girls".The scenery was out of this world and some of the places we stayed along the way were first class. The first night we stayed at a YHA hostel in a little country place called Lorne. Tobi and I camped there in tents they had set up and the girls chose the dorms. Reminded me of Africa. Tobi was hilarious he is terrified of spiders. Lisa he is worse than you, he is so funny. We kept the tent zipped tight to keep the monsters out. They are everywhere, some bigger than my hand scrunched up. Yuck gives me the heeby jeebies talking about them.
Along the way, we were very energetic, did lots of walks in our flip flops not advisable because of snakes and spiders but hey ho! We're backpackers. Saw lots of Koala's rather doped clinging onto trees. Stopped at this famous golf course where wild kangaroos hang out. We saw at least 50 there. We were right up close to them. Did move when one started to growl after about his fifth picture. Bless him! We also saw lots of emu's - weird looking things, deer, wallaby's and the most colourful birds you can imagine.
We saw the twelve apostles at sunset and also the next day. They are pretty amazing, is weird how they form. Also read about a lot of the ship wrecks that happened years ago. Quite interesting.
Yesterday we headed for the Grampians National Park. Stayed at "Tim's Place". This was great we had our own little apartment with living room, bathroom and kitchen. So nice. We joined a night walk on offer to see the wild life then did our own one later. This was more fun. Scaring each other along the way. Next day Tobi and I climbed this huge mountain. Was great apart from my foot hurting now and again. Stupid foot. When we got to the top we did a bit of climbing on rocks to see a cave. Really good, a bit scarey at times though. A lot of scrambling in the heat but fun. Also got lost on the way down which made it more of a laugh. Yeah Mum/Dad it's ok, we were careful and safe :)
Late yesterday afternoon we set off on our huge drive from the Grampians to Adelaide. over 500 km. Massive and some of it we had to do in the dark, not nice.Australia is huge. I know I knew this before I came but you really don't feel the extent of it until you are here. Its just big long roads very baron nothing on either side for hours. A long tedious drive. Tobi and I shared the drive yesterday was our turn. Liked the driving, took a little bit of getting used to an automatic. I was hilarious at first kept putting the windscreen wipers on instead of the indicator. They are where my indicator is at home. The joys.
Well now in Adelaide very tired arrived just after midnight but took us ages to find hostel. Got to move today as no room for us and then the job hunting starts again. BOO HOO! Not fun!
A fab trip really needed it, felt like travelling again rather than staying working in big cities. What my time here is all about, having a laugh and seeing the world.
