Well, I'm on the Oz Experience bus!!! Its so much fun! Having such a laugh... it's not quite like the Kiwi bus as they use mini-buses so the groups are a lot smaller: but that works out quite well as it's nice to get to know everyone! We did have a bit of a stress when we first got on though as we hadnt booked any buses past Airlie beach - we thought you just stayed on the bus until you got off, but you have to really try and plan out your trip at this time of year as EVERYONE is trying to get down to Sydney for Christmas and New Year!! But we got it sorted, and even though we couldnt get a bus to take us to Surfers Paradise, we've met a brilliant couple called Jimmy and Kelly who are hiring a camper van from Brisbane - so they might take us there for the day!
So as I say, Beth and I are meeting some really nice people and having lots of fun - our first stop with Keith (driver) and Bear (guide) was at Mission Bay where I had my first taste of kangaroo!! Very nice meat and sweeter than steak. And as its from a 'wild' animal, there's hardly any fat apparantly - so it's good for you (sorry little Joeys - I did feel a bit bad when I was ordering it!!). The hostel was a bit of a change from Gilligans - it had a pool and there were hammocks everywhere and it was right opposite the beach... felt more like being in Fiji, and I guess the hot weather helps - my tan is coming along very nicely (and yes, I am using factor 30!)
After a late night at Mission Bay, we got a new guide (called Puddles) to keep Keith company and then went to Magnetic Island (was a bit worried it might be like LOST after hearing the name, but luckily it wasnt!) where we stayed at Base (which was actually, I'm sorry to say, the worst Base I've stayed at! The setting was just stunning, but the rooms didnt have a/c and the chef was ill so we all had to pay $10 for one sausage (no, didnt make sense to us either!) and other things, but cant be bothered to moan as I am still having the time of my life!!) - went sea kayaking with Keith, the driver, but Puddles didnt get involved.
We are now at Airlie beach until saturday - and am going on a boat tomoro for three days/two nights - its called the Avatar: everyone just comes here to go on a boat and everyone says its the best thing theyve done. Beth and I are going on a massive trimaran (bit like a cattermaran but with three thingys) as I dont want to get sea sick - some of the sailboats go on their side etc - looks far too scary and sick -inducing for me!!!! So poor old Beth isnt having quite the sailing experience she imagined - but I think our boat looks the best... everyone on the bus is trying to convince themselves that their boat will be the best (there are so many to choose from, but no one belives Stewart that his boat 'Spank Me' will be the best! tee hee hee), its becoming quite hilarious! Cant wait until we all get back and can really compare.
Staying at a place called Koalas, then after here we go to a cattle shed at Kroombit for the night - where we get to ride a mechanical bull and take part in a goat rodeo! Think it may turn out to be a little bit like the Poo Pub night on the Kiwi Experience....
We all went out last night to Beaches and got free beer and wine which was cool (for being on the oz bus) dont want to drink much tonight though as I dont want to risk feeling ill!!!
I'll let you know if the Kwells work!!
