After Banos we moved on (minus Sophie) to a town called Riobamba. It is a larger town than Banos but no near as beautiful. In fact Riobamba was very plain and I think lacked character. We didn´t spend very long here (you really didn´t need too) and on our only full day we went on a trip along Ecuadors first ever rainway line. Our route was called the Devil´s nose route, (which was quite apt as it was rather scary and we were close to near death experiences at times) it took us down through Riobamba high into the mountains and then travelled down into the valley along some very narrow rigdes. The actual train was quite like a bus in style but on tracks. It was only one carriage and we were able to sit on the roof (that is bus like for Ecuador!!!). We travelled on the roof and at times it felt like you were travelling on thin air as you were so close to the edge of the cliff that you could no longer see the path that you were travelling on! On the way back to the town it started to rain a little but we still decided that it would be nice to sit on the roof (with our raincoats of course). After about 15mins it started to pour and we got absolutely soaked. It was raining so hard that we all had to sit and face backwards to be able to even open our eyes. Umm turned out not be be such a great idea although it was so funny that it was worthwhile. I was already quite wet anyway as at the platform I had a little accident and fell off the edge into a muddy puddle on my bum!!! A man did help me up and then turned around and burst into histerics of laughter - was so funny though so I don´t blame him. I ended up having to wear Alex´s yellow stripy trousers, my socks and flip flops home - what a picture!
The journey back to Jatun Sacha by bus wasn´t so great this time (although we have become pros at travelling around Ecuador on bus) as Alex´s became quite ill (we think it was from the yoghurt he had eaten for breakfast). Made it back safely though and was really nice to see everyone and be back in the jungle even though we had only been away for 5 days!!
