So we slept in separate beds last night for the first time in years! It was weird to be fair, but we both slept well considering we were sharing a room with 6 strangers. It's the first time I've slept in that sort of accomodation and it was better than I though it would be. Everyone was quite considerate.
Anyway, out with the old and in with the much better. We now know the place we stayed last night is nicknamed 'the ghetto'. The woman at the reception for our new place, Dingo Moon Lodge, said it must have been 'interesting'. She was right. Now we share with 4 strangers who we haven't met yet but this place is worth the $2.50 extra. Proper
Pool, breakfast and free laundry. Internet access is quite pricy like so haven't logged on yet. We're saving it till we know everything we want to look at. Started looking into fruit picking on the east coast and the northern territory. Looks sound, but my heart's set on working on a boat. Don't know why but I think it would be a good crack like.
One of the strangers just turned up. American lad. Doing the opposite to us. Australia to Bali to Borneo etc.
It seems everyone is doing things the opposite to us, are we missing a trick?
Had a nice walk down to the newly renovated wharf. Looks posh but had a nice feel to it. It was packed with bars and there was a wave machine and man made beach. Sounds strange for Australia to have a man made beach but because it's Darwin there are a lot of stingers in the real sea. It's a shame really as we are surrounded by it! After a stroll we went food shopping for the first good steak we've had on this trip. Got it from woolworths of all places and proceeded to cook it in our lovely outdoor kitchen facility at the lodge. After the 50 other traveller had used it that is. We ate tea with a nice Swiss bloke who told us tales of the wallabies and kuala's he had seen and then out of nowhere a flying fox joined in on the tree next to us. He was a brave sole who stared me out for ages and then proceeded to munch down on the pines of the tree like he was just another guest to our table. I know the locals are meant to be friendly but this was more than I expected.
Day two at the dml and the weather has been scorchio! Still rains at night but it's nice when the days have been so hot. I missed breakfast as usual, had a nice dip in the pool and then proceeded to the tax office to sort out our tax number. Apparently you don't need one by law but without it we would be taxed 45% so it would be pretty stupid to not do it! Minimum wage here is about $18 an hour so things are looking up! Finally be able to go out! If we get a job that is. Almost got Internet sorted to. There's not so many cyber cafes, it's more aimed at the payg Market. $1 for 15 mins everywhere. Not cheap but needs must. Can't actually get ours to work yet. They gave us a dodgy card like. Katie's just nipped out to sort them. Would have sorted them out me self like but there was a shopfull of them and only one of me so I let it slide just this once.
Tried to find the local library for free web access but failed. The signposts aren't very good and so instead we walked into town after a minor disagreement. Things can't always be perfect.
Splashed out on a few tinnies tonight to get this party started.
On the way back from fetching the a local was carrying his baby in much the same fashion I was carrying my crate. He turned to me and said "gease maaaate, one of us is doin something right!". Suppose you had to be there but it made me chuckle!
Everyone here at the hostel is quite mellow so maybe a couple of drunken Brits will liven them up......or make them laugh or alianate some of em further! Let's test it out.
