Ubud was lovely. The buildings were so beautiful, the people were so friendly and so much art everywhere. I went to Monkey Gardens and the market on the first day and later that night met 3 girls staying opposite me. We had arranged to climb a volcano the next morning which meant we had to get up a 3am, endure the scariest car journey of out lives to the bottom, and thanks to our hostel owner being so so wrong, borrow the guides jumpers as apparently climbing a mountain in shorts and tshirts is just stupid. It was so worth the climb and the cold however as the view of the sunrise was amazing. At 6am we opended a can of beer and ate bread at the top with 2 hungover Italians who had come along with us to climb the volcano too. Falling asleep in the car on the way back none of us were impressed when our hostel owner, Tutde, drove us to a coffee making place. So glad that he did though as there were some more beautiful views and we got to try local made coffee... of which one was made of Squirrel poo. After that, he drove through a village with more stunning views of rice paddies, local women carrying things on their heads, school children and eventually back home to sleep. During the drive we had beginning to talk about the film Eat Pray Love with Julia Roberts that was filmed in Ubud. Tutde explained that the palm reader she visited lives in Ubud and he would take us to see him the next day.
Waiting two hours to see Ketut Liyer didnt live up to the expectation however as he told all of us we would live to 100, stay with the same man till we died, get married at 24 and we were all very beautiful and lucky.. hmmm. But the novelty was good.
I loved Ubud though but we all wanted to get to the Gilli Islands so had to leave the next day :( xx
