We woke up early at our hostel City Fort Rest at 5.30. The workers were kind and had prepared some breakfast early for us with some cereal and orange juice. We followed the directions of the hostel workers to the train station. We couldn't find the train station. Luckily a tuktuk driver picked us up and took us to the station. We looked very funny with our bags squished on us. Very little room. It was lucky we had already pre booked tickets on the train. We sat in first class so we had air conditioning and free wifi. We also pretty much had our own carriage. It was so great and such a pretty journey as we traveled next to the beach from Colombo Fort to Hikkaduwa. The journey saw lots of beautiful small villages on the beach with little house/ huts and lots of palm trees. Some areas of the beach were covered in litter but in some sections we went past big organised rubbish clean up days were happening. After about 2 hours we arrived at Hikkaduwa and had a short walk to the hostel
Arrived walk train to hostel Love and Kind. It was a small hostel/ guest house with mosquito nets. Very basic but clean with very friendly staff. We put our bags in our room then walked along the main street seeing most places were closed due to full moon day. As apart of the special day lots of locals were around with free food offerings. We got some free chicken soup from the street. We kept walking in search of a dragon restaurant recommend by hostel owner but after a very long time of walking we couldn't find it so decided to find a place on the beach. We went to lunch at moon beam on beach. It was 10.30 am when we asked for lunch. We got some drinks and a seafood plate include some lassis (juice mixed with yoghurt). We were only customers! Amazing seafood- we had crabs, calamari, fish, lobster and prawns for $25. So cheap and so delicious. Best thing ever Dion asked for a beer. Then the guy came out with a tea kettle and cup. Apparently they pour beer in kettle to avoid all the froth so Dion was sipping on his beer like he was having tea. Hilarious!! We then walked back after our seafood platter brunch back to our accommodation. On the way, in our street was another free food offering. This Sri Lankan guy chased us up the street to bring us a cone of ice cream. It was yummy vanilla ice cream. Everyone is so incredibly kind and friendly and appear to be genuine as they don't require any tips. We sat down in our rooms then before we knew it we were napping. We woke a few hours later. We decided to visit the beach. We were a bit nervous to wear bikinis as we were the only western people but we asked and found out it is okay. We think it's pretty full of western bikini wearers in peak season because no one really was bothered by us. We joined in a local beach cricket game which was great fun they played with a wooden beam and an equivalent to a bouncy wahoo ball. We swam in the water and were surrounded by locals wanting to take selfie photos with us. They were so funny they would linger close by then say selfie. We would take one and they would require another. We got some money and walked to dinner by this stage not many places were open but we found somewhere on the beach. It was so cool watching the dark clouds surround us with the wind as we were ready for torrential rains and a storm. But it never came just stayed windy. I ordered the grilled calamari but I came out with so much garlic. I ate avoiding as much of the sauce as I could but I seemed to be fine. It was only 7pm by the time we ate dinner so we walked to bar. We had some new friends join us with 2 dogs following our every move becoming our protectors. Everything was closed due to full moon holiday and no alcohol was meant to be consumed. We asked one bar who had the owners out the front and they said they were closed but we're very easily convinced to be open. Yet again they were so kind and friendly looking after us so well as we enjoyed a couple of drinks sitting on the beach then an early night. Everyone so beautiful friendly. No hassling. Such a great first day in Sri Lanka. Already in love with Sri Lanka :)
