We arrived into Varanasi this morning after a 12 hour train journey. It wasn't too bad, had a nice cabin for just the two of us, and managed to get a fair bit of sleep.
We got to the hotel about 8am- very nice, overlooking the Ganges. We had breakfast on the rooftop (there is a restaurant up there- we didn't just climb up ourselves with a picnic!) and watched some monkeys (and goats!) scampering about on the rooftops. We also saw a few people washing themselves in the river, which as you can imagine, is filthy dirty. However to them the water is holy, so they see nothing wrong with lathering up with soap and then washing it off in the polluted river, ultimately making them more dirty than when they started!
A guide is going to show us some of Varanasi this evening for a couple of hours, including the ghats where they burn the bodies. Should be interesting! Rather annoyingly we asked how much it would cost, and he gave us this wishy-washy answer of "Whatever you think is appropriate, Sir. I don't do this for the money". Biggest load of crap I've ever heard! He'll be sorry when we hand over 50 rupees (about 60p).....!!
Tomorrow morning we plan to take a boat ride at dawn- very touristy but has to be done!
Right, our room appears to be ready so I'm going to have a much needed shower. Thankfully, what with being a woman and all, I don't smell. Andrew, however, stinks. Hahaha! He's sitting right next to me and doesn't look amused!
