We arrived very safely in Puerto Iguazu after a short, but very delayed flight from Buenos Aires. We were expecting a bit of a shack of an airport, but it was actually very nice, bit strange as it looked a bit like a red brick house, but it was very modern inside and very organised. We got a taxi/bus from the airport, like a mini bus that we shared with lots of other people, it took about half an hour and dropped us off right outside the door of Hostel Timbo Iguazu, all for 15 pesos each (about 3 pounds). The hostel is nice, very different to Estoril but it's all very authentic looking, wooden with hammocks hanging everywhere (which Gemma keeps making good use of) and there is only really one downside to Iguazu - the mosquitos! They're everywhere! But we've made good use of out deet and our mosquito nets so it's all ok.
We went for dinner last night at a little cafe bar (it had no name) and we had a bit of difficulty trying to order any food at first but then the owner came out and was much more patient with us and Gemma wowed him with her spanish and ordered us both a beer and some Empanadas, which are an Argentinian special, kind of like a little pasty. It was really good and we were even more impressed when we got the bill, we paid about one pound fifty each. It seems that Iguazu really is cheap and cheerful.
Today we got up fairly early and had breakfast at the hostel. We're slowly but surely becoming quite accustomed to dulce de leche for breakfast, although this morning we did have some kind of strange cornflake/strawberry yoghurt combination...anyway, we had our fill and off we went to get the bus to the falls.
Iguazu Falls was a bit different to what we were expecting, mainly because we didn't know what to expect. It's actually 'Iguazu Parque Nacional' and you pay into the whole park and can just explore for the whole day. You can get trains around it, and there are loads of different treks you can do with lots of little water falls, well, we say little, they're little in comparrison to the main attraction of Devils throat. As for the main waterfalls, I don't really know what to say, they really are indescribable. We explored practically the entire park, walking the majority of it, and then we went on the Nautical Adventure, where we were life-jacketed up and we hopped on a boat and driven through some of the smaller water falls. We were soaked head to toe, like we'd been in a shower, but we dried very quickly in this lovely summer sunshine we've been having here :P
We were both once again exhausted after a very active day and decided to go back for another very cheap tea at the nameless cafe bar. Thought we'd just update you before we go and cosy up under our mosquito nets, however they don't seem to be around as much tonight, Gemma thinks that they maybe have a night off on a Saturday, maybe go to a mozzydisco! Anyway we're gonna get off to bed because we have a bit of a nerve wracking day tomorrow, we're catching the bus through Paraguay into Bolivia and we're not sure how smoothly it's going to go. We were worried we might get stranded in Paraguay overnight during bus change over so we quickly booked a nights accomodation in Asuncion tonight to make sure we don't.
More updates and pictures to come. Hope you're all well and having as much fun as we are, though we very much doubt it :D xxxxxxxxxxxx
