Somethings that I've noticed about culture in Argentina after a week
1)Cars-Unlike in the United States, Cars have the right of way. IIn the States, people step in front of cars to cross or even j walk. But, in Argentina this never happens. In fact, even if a pedestestrian is waiting and a car is coming, the car does not slow down. It even sometime speeds up! I've had to make sure there was no car near me for 50 feet before I cross. Simply put, if you ever come to Argentina, Before you cross, make sure you look both ways, because that car will run you over.
2) Empanadas-These little portable foods are everywhere. Often, people eat them, including me, eat them on the street. Think calzone filled with onions and meats such as beef, pork. Que rico!
3)Directions in the City-People are so willing to help tourists who are lost. Every time I've gotten a little lost, the portenos pointed me to the right address.
4)Public Transportation: They have a very well developed and functional system here to get you where you need to go. I take the Subway to my classes. However, I think the collectivos might be a little risky. Driving in Buenos Aires is like driving in New York-the Traffic is terrible. Add in the fact that they drive incredibly aggressively like all portenos, and you're in for a ride! I read that last week two collectivos crashed resulting in several injuries because they both jumped the yellow light.
5)Dogs-They are everywhere. People have them as pets, and continually walk them in my neighborhood. It's kind of funny because sometimes as you walk around the city, you see one person, who is clearly a professional dog walker, walking a herd of dogs. I mean like 20 dogs at one time! There are also several stray dogs wandering around the city's barrios. However, as progressive as Argentina is, there is apparently no law saying that people need to clean up the dog's caca. I stepped in one the other day, and that was no fun.
