Where to begin.. We´re sitting in Lima, again, just waiting for the flight tomorrow to Costa Rica where we´re going to meet HANNAH BANANA:D
Anyways, 12 days in Peru with activities: sweat, blood and tears really takes its toll on us. We´re exhausted in other words. Well Tiril is not, but Kaja is and cannot wait for the beach!
We started off with a day in Cusco where we had a brief introduction and met the rest of our group at the hotel. Altogether we were 3 Aussies, 4 Norwegians and 3 Americans. All young people except for this "old" guy who formed the back troop. Good to know it wasn´t only Kaja who was in bad shape. Actually. when you´re walking on 4000m.a.s.l. even Petter Northug would feel unfit. The altitude is a b****.
Since we weren´t able to do Machupicchu (because of the landslides for those who still haven´t gotten the news) we did another trek called the Lares trek. It didn´t include any Inka sites or anything, only small huts with natives living HIGH up with the all the lamas and the alpakkas (same family), but we did the lots of Inka sites on the way up to the Lares village where we were going to start off.
The trip itself was started off in the hot spring. The guys jumped in, 38 degrees, while the girls sat down and took pics. Didn´t want to get wet before we even started the trip. The first day we walked for only 40min before we sat down and had lunch in a tent with a table and foldable chairs (all the meals were delicious. We had omelettes, pancakes, trout, soups, spaghetti, you name it. And LOTS of tea.) Then we walked for another couple of hours before we arrived at the camping site. We played cards, had dinner, and at 20.00 we were told to go to bed. After all we were going to get a wake up call at 06.00. Can´t even remember the last time we went to bed at 20.00! So you can imagine how much sleep we got that night. Not too much really.
Second day we walked for 7!hours. We got up to the highest point, which was 4500m.a.s.l. (higher than Machupicchu). It kind of added up since the only reason we came to Peru was to do M.P.
After that everything went a lot faster, but jeez do we regret walking down too fast. Don´t know about a single person who didn´t feel sore in his thighs, knees, toes and hips the day after. We only camped in wet tents for 2 nights, the last night we stayed at a hostel in Ollataytambo, which apparently is both bigger and prettier to look at than Machupicchu. Saa det saa!
Trekking was more interesting than fun (at least when we were walking, at the camp sites we had fun:) ) and sometimes Kaja would forget why on earth she was doing this (still not 100% sure), while Tiril on the other hand would very much like to do the whole trip again with some English people we met in the Amazon. But we´re off to Costa Rica, thank God. Also need to mention than Tiril is enormously proud of Kaja for doing the trekking, especially when we got to a steep part and Kaja broke down. The stupid guide thought it was because of the altitude but we just have to say it was because she´s scared of heights. Not less embarrassing though. Kule-Kari you should be proud too!
Between the trekking and the Amazon we had a day free in Cusco and we had know idea how to spend it. Ended up seeing another Inka site called Sacsayhuamán (sexy woman), 3 museums and watching a folklore show at night. Wow were we cultural people or what!
The Amazon was pretty cool. It wasn´t quite what we had expected (not like the movies AT ALL:P) but we saw Caymans (part of the alligator family and only exist in South America), otters, BIG rats (size of an otter), monkeys and lots of lots of lots of birds (stinky birds- non-eatable). We also heard choirs of frogs and birds (some sounded like babies screaming). We stayed at the coolest lodge ever. Everything is supposed to be biodegradable, even the shampoo, and there´s no hot water and no electricity in the rooms, only candlelights. It was all very pre-historic. Hehe. No rooms had windows and the doorwas replaced by a curtain. It was all über cool.
We did a 2hours animal sightseeing on a catamaran (we seriously only moved 200m with the boat), night sightseeing and Botanic Garden (lots of plants and a hut where the patients stay after they get healed). It was all very interesting, especially since we´re not very interested in plants. Other than that we played a lot of cards with some English boys (yes we call them boys cause they were only 18), and we laid in the hammock and read books. Someone forgot to tell us we arrived in the middle of the rain season so it was all very wet. We were told to bring ponchos and sun screen. Kaja´s well-invested poncho came handy:)
Peace out till next time:) T-bird and Kay-jay
