The time has come to leave Oz and we've been loving every second of it.
Basically we've been hanging out in the chubby for about 2 weeks time until we dropped it off in Cairns. On the way we've met so many great people (and a couple of weirdos too) and we've had the best time.
After Fraser Island the time had to come to give the Whitsundays, which consists of lots of islands, a visit. We'd booked ourselves on a sailboat called "Solway Loss" and were out for 4 days while we snorkelled, played Tarzan in the swing rope and watched biiig fish and dolphins from the boat. (Much safer than being in the water and get heart attacks.)
After that we had a week of no arranged trips whatsoever where we slowly moved our way along the coast with the guys, doing absolutely nothing. May 17th was going to be celebrated as usual, though in a slightly different manner. It was the first day in WEEKS that it poored down the whole day and so we settled down for a camping site at South Mission Beach. We made scrambled eggs for breakfast, painted our faces in the colour of the Norwegian flag and had taco for dinner. All in all it was a lovely day that ended with a bit too much Stanley white wine...
We got to Cairns on the 20th where we were to drop off the van and also get our scuba certificate! The course lasted for 4 days where we spent the two last one on a boat, diving with sharks and clown fish; doing night dive, deep dive (30m) and free dive! We went out with a cool group of people so the fact that the Norwegian guys had just left us for the Cook Islands the same day we went out on the boat didn't really matter at the moment. It was a sad moment when we said goodbye though..
Back in Cairns we spent 4 days of just sun-bathing, reading and free fitness sessions in the park before it was time to fly up to Darwin.
Kakadu National Park is the size of half of Switzerland, pretty big in other words, and is on the World Heritage List. That's where we were gonna spend 3 days searching for crocs, looking at birds, learning about the aboriginals and sleeping in swags. But first it was Tiril's birthday! I don't think there is one person who didn't know that and it could be pretty difficult to get through on the phone sometimes. We flew the same day, which was kind of a bummer for her, so we had a big, tasty lunch before we started preparing for a good night out. (The fact that we were getting picked up at 6am the enxt morning didn't matter. At the time.) We stayed out till laaate and after 1hr of sleep it was time to get our asses on the Adventure Tour bus. With an interesting mix of people and 5 months of socialising we stuck to ourselves most of the time. Especially in the beginning, untill we realized the Dutch couple was pretty cool, of course:) We saw birds, we saw a 5m crococdile, a stuffed buffalo from "Crocodile Dundee" and lots of lots of creeks and bumpy roads. I'm not going to lie, we've had our share of culture and nature for now.
Last night in Darwin we stayed at some really cool Aussies' appartments. They were eager on making our last night in Australia a great one and we had lots of fun (captured in the 322 photos Tiril took during the night).
So we're leaving Australia with big smiles on our faces. We'll be back.
