so everybody we've been in FIJI!!! for just over a week and we are in love with the islands!! we are gonna do a summary of all the stuff we've done cos there is sooo much!! we did a organised trip around the islands of fiji for a week and visited some amazingly beautiful places, all unique and with different qualities. Here are some of our favourites:
first stop was Nanuya Lai Lai up in the north, here we met a very gay host who was named Queen (hmmm) the island reminded us so much of the LOST island as there was a big jungly/foresty bit in the middle. there were two main beaches and one of them required a 30min walk across the island, up hills down hils....yeah we were exhausted but got to cool off in the sea which was so clear that you could see fishes swimming right up to u by the shore line. had a very lazy 2 days here, swinging in hammocks, sitting on the beach and making friends with lots of doggies..they were adorable, even liz got to love them!!
the next stop was the Wanna Taki cruise, which was a boat that took us around some islands. we were so elegant walking round the ship..stumbling into people, spilling our welcome drinks on the floor, but eventually found our sea-legs and really enjoyed our trip! the best bit by far was the scuba diving, which we both did, being instructed by a rather cute Dutch man..who insisted on holding our hands the whole time..no arguments from us!! once we got the hang of breathing underwater (its just not natural!!) and equalising our ears we had a wicked time seeing all the colourful fish, octupus, clams and starfish! were under for an hour and it flew by!! we're def gonna try it again..soon!
next island was Kuata, which was more rocky in appearance, but the entertainment made up for it! the evenings had themes and the first one was GAY night...which meant all the guys dressed up as women! it was so funny watching all these burly men mincing around in skirts! they danced for us then got us up to learn the Fiji makerena..very funny indeed but really good fun, we even indulged in the local beer! The next night was Fijian night which involved a traditional kava ceremony first of all. This was our first tasting of the local tipple which pretty much tasted like muddy water if we're honest but made your tongue go a bit numb, just imagine what you feel like drinking it all night. The food was all local and we had to eat with our fingers, not so easy when some of it all slippery. Then we got entertained with several songs and dances. The outfits were the best, grass skirts and face paint. Was really good though and boy could some of them move!!! Imagine stereotypical tribal dancing and you know what we mean. Again at the end we got dragged up to dance though (twice), given up protesting anymore! On the last day Liz went reef snorkelling out in the middle of the ocean, did the typical fall of a boat backwards thing then spent quite a while admiring the pretty fish again and even saw 6 sharks! Not massive but cool to see none the less.
Next stop was South Sea Island, so so tiny this place. Can walk across it in about 30 seconds and around it in a few mins. Saw beautiful sunset from here, amazed how quickly it goes down, you can see it move. Spent the eve doing a quiz, which our team was shockingly bad at, and crab racing! They literally drag them out of the bushes and write numbers on their backs then chuck them back in afterwards! The next day we had a trip out on the Seaspray which is a yacht that took us to a different group of islands. Quite a small little boat which meant Jen got to sit right next to the singers and get serenaded. The endless free food and drink made it all worthwhile though, including the free champagne to greet us. We went to a village and saw a local school, another kava ceremony and indulged in a little shopping at a shell market. Then we went to Moldriki - the actual name of the island where Tom Hanks filmed Castaway. Was actually a really gorgeous island and again more time had to be spent sunbathing and snorkelling.
Back on the mainland now but heading out again to another island tomorrow as we just love seeing them so much. As we said this is just highlights but you get the picture on why we enjoy Fiji so much. Such an easy-going way of life and the people are so friendly and always laughing. So we'll prob be out of touch again for a week again so until then - BULA!
