The hike today was an eye opener I think for Pam. Hiking isn't easy but it's fun and something different. Our hike tomorrow up the volcano is a 6K so it's gonna be harder and longer and I just hope we're all ready for it. The waterfall on this hike though was beautiful- cold but so neat to see! We were hoping to get fish afterwards because it's so fresh here but apparently with it being so windy they aren't going out which
is kind of a bummer. It is really windy- not that Id know what to do if it wasn't it's hard here because the house we are staying at gets stuffy really fast so you need the windows open. My room is pretty much one big window which still doesn't make it cold but gets it cooler. The con to having the window open is you here EVERYTHING. There's dogs barking all the time you here the wind outside on the trees, there's birds and roosters too. It's tough to sleep but besides that the house really isn't that bad. It's small, with the bathroom in the kitchen and one bed out in the open but the lady we're renting from is super nice. She's made us different things like papaya juice which is incredible, coconut flan, rice and beans, and so forth. She also lives in a small cottage on the same property so she's always here to help which is nice. She's white and didn't live here until she visited one year and then fell in love and decided to stay, which is kind of neat. So she speaks both English and Spanish really well. It's such a beautiful place I don't blame her for wanting to stay- I wish I could- I know I couldn't live like this for long but being able to grow my own food and be happy with the simplicities of life would just be incredible. I mean you drive around and you look in their houses, you see there's really nothing in there- they don't have doors or any other furniture yet they're not complaining, they're just happy to have a place. You then look around and there's all these dogs everywhere, so many strays yet they all look happy- granted there's some that look sick or too skinny which is so sad and makes your heart break but none are on the road as road kill- not one. Same goes for horses, chickens, even cows, there's so many that just wonder around and here it's normal and the people accept them... Back home you think about all the dead animals that you find on the roads and it's sickening, people could avoid them but they don't. Animals could roam freely, yet we have hunting and other things that don't let them. I don't know how I feel about which is better- the way the animals can roam freely here, yet some end up starving or getting parasites or other things or how they are back home. Both don't seem completely right.
