6 days, 2 castles, 5 tram rides, 1/2 pig (not consumed...viewed), 4 hours of cleaning (boys), and 15...maybe 18 beers is all it took to feel a bit settled in Prague! Even in the snowy cold and bare trees, this city is astounding.
I've seen Prague Castle, Karlstejn Castle, Wenceslas Square, Old Town Square, and walked across Charles Bridge. I braved Letna Beer Garden on Sunday in what I'm guessing was 25-degree weather after witnessing the aftermath of a "zabijačka" (pig-killing) followed by a sausage making and pork prep demonstration ('I definitely smell a pork product of some sort' ...Wayne's World - gotta love it!). The fact the pig was hanging upside-down and sliced in half was much easier to handle since it was so cold and it had been dead for awhile. However, there's an actual zabijačka this weekend and might check it out.
During the months leading up to my visit, I had plenty of time to envision how Praha would look & feel. Boy was I wrong! It's much more urban than I pictured with tall, endless flat (apartment) buildings and store after store. Cars honking outside the centrally-located flat non-stop. The tram system combined with the three metro lines surpass NYC's transportation system and comes without the smell of days-old trash...always a plus. I still miss the Highlander, but hope she's enjoyiong her new Cambodian lifestyle.
I've had goulash (yum!), dumplings ('knedliky' I believe), duck, doner kabob (sort of like a gyro), sauerkraut, cabbage, and even braved blood soup at the pig festival. All surprisingly awesome. If you're wondering...I was the one who wanted to try blood soup & while I'm glad to be able to say I've tried it, I will never, ever, ever have it again. (shudder...)
I can't wait for the city to bloom and officially steal my heart!
