SO...this picture is misleading. It turns out the rain in Spain does not fall mostly on the plane. It falls in Valencia, by the bucket full. I have never seen so much rain. Sure, Vancouver is bad and London was bad, but this is nuts. I came here spefically to lie on the beach for three days...so much for that.
I took the train here. Train travel is where its at. It was beautiful, tons of space and comfortable. So I arrive in Valencia and have lunch at the train station. Word of warning: do not eat tuna in valencia. It tasted off. So I gave up on the sandwich and ate granola bars instead. Then I headed off to find my hostel. In Spain, from 2-5 everything stops and they siesta. So I get here and no one is around, all the shops are closed and I´m lost. Its also pissing it down. I finally make my way to the hostel and get settled. Then I go to get food. Get lost, and end up coming back 3 hours later. I get back to the hostel and go to watch a movie, where I end up meeting two guys from Australia and two from the UK. We all watch Jackie brown and stay up late chatting away. These guys were hilarious and we were in tears most of the night (from laughing...)
So we made plans to hang out the next day, but we couldn´t find the guys from the UK. Nick, Mark (aussie guys) and I headed out to the Catherdral. This is the home of the holy grail, well one of them. This is the one that the pope has acknoweldged. The cathedral was beuatiful. I just wish I knew more about the religious history to really understand what everything meant. The holygrail is in this big room, surrounded by glass. Its the kind of room where you expect to hear that ahhhahaahahaa music (note: please refer to Eddie Izzard). There doesn´t seem to be much secruity around it, so we decided it must be boobied trapped like in Indiana Jones, where a big rock will roll out and arrows.
After we finished in the catherdral we walked up the bell tower...all 207 steps. Which doesn´t sound like a lot, but trust me you felt your quads when you got to the top. It would have been a lot nicer if it wasn´t cloudy, but it still gave us a beautiful view of the city.
After the bell tower, we walked over to the market. Which is great, but not as good as the one in Barcelona. I may be partial though, because in Barcelona there is a whole row of Candy stalls. We wondered around trying to order single bananas, and testing which one of us could get exactally what we wanted. The stall owners were really nice and kept giving us weird spainish things to try, some good and some not so good. All Nick can say in spanish is si and salada, which made his ordering skills subpar. My excellant use of the term ¨where is¨ is not that useful in the market, but piquoto (little) was my secret weapon. Oh kyall, I took a picture of a really disgusting skinned animal, but I wasn´t sure what it was so I took a picture of the label and once I can upload photos you can tell me.
After the market we went looking for this park, that used to be a river but they divereted it and filled it in and made some gardens. Then we head down to the the science complex, that has beautiful buildings, one of which is supposed to rival the sydney operah house. The aussi´s disagree. So its still raining so we went to the science museum, which was supposed to be in English and interactive. Well some of it was, but most of it wasn´t.- So we just guessed most of the time. The best bits were when you got to go in this room and scan your body and then it showed up on the screen and ytou could change your clothes and make yourself fat or muscely. We just goofed around in the museum all afternoon. Then we headed back to the hostel and had own siesta, which is where i fell asleep all night. Those two guys are hilarious, and I´m going to try and meet up with them in Budapest.
Today it was raining buckets again. I walked to one museum, which was open but not really, it was confusing. The women said you can look at the building but not the exhibitis...so I headed to the museum of fine arts. By the time I got there I was drenched and cold so I quickly looked around and then left. Most of the paintings were of important people in spanish history, with the desicriptions in spanish...not helpful. It got beautiful out this afternoon so I went to the centre of town and sat in a cafe, a cholcolatir, and had the most amazing chocolate icecream I have ever ate. Now its raining again, and I´m thinking of going to a bull fight tonight. Hopefully its sunny tomorrow because i really want to go the beach. So much for Alicante, as its raining even more there.
I like spain, despite the rain. The people are friendly, the buildings are beautiful and the food is good. The coffee is amazing, and I don´t even like coffee. Spainsh women have the most beuatiful hair...spanish men have too much hair. I can´t quite figure out when the spainards go to work, because it seems to me they are either siestaing or in coffee shops. There´s no rush hour, and no one seems to get up before 9.
