Hi Everyone,
So I headed to barcelona this past Monday. I flew Air Iberia, which was like being in the movie Aeroplane. Everything was from the seventies and they played this very strange music all the way there. Also, Celine Dion.
First off, I apoligize to all you spanish lovers for any mistakes I make in names/places because I can't spell in English, let alone spanish. So I got the aerobus to placa catulunya, which is a central part of Barcelona. Then I grab the metro, realizing I left my bag full of my guide books and my jackets on the bus. I couldn't go back for it. I made it to the hostel, which is very nice. The people who are staying here are great, but I'm not so sure about the two owners. They aren't very friendly.
Anyway I had a shower, got some food and chatted to some people in the hostel all night. THe next day I called the bus company and they had found my bag. I was with Jessica and James and we headed out to rent bikes. It took us 2 hours to find a bike rental place because the street names are one thing on one side of the street and another thing on the other. But looking for the bikes gave us a chance to explore. Barcelona is a beautiful city. There is detail in all the architecture.
We got bikes and headed up La Rambla. La Rambla is a pedistrian street, with two small car lanes. It is kind of like Commercial Drive, but way better. There are street preformers, lots of cool shops and markets. Also lots of people! Biking up there was nuts. In the end we just walked our bikes because it was too hard to navigate between the people. We made it to the aerobus office and picked up my bag. The books were still in it, but the jackets had gone..replaced by a scarf.
So then we biked to the market, got bread, some random spanish cheese, and the most amazing fruit. We biked to the beach and stayed there for a bit and then took the bikes home. so then we went for Tappas. We went to this little place right next door. We told them we wanted to spend fifteen euros each and they bought us out various things, cheese plates and seafood plates. And the most amazing spanish wine. Emma, you would have loved this. THe people who owned the place were very sweet and once they realized we spoke no spanish they just started giving us different things to try, like aplkaat. Which looks like pudding, has the texture of pudding, but tastes like an intense apple liquor. I didn't know, ate the whole thing in one bite and then had the store laugh at me, while I chocked, because it was so strong.
That night we went for a hike up a mountain, whose name I foget. WHen I say hike I mean walk on a paved road and when I say mountain I mean a big hill. Hike in spanish is not the same as hike in Canada. The views from the top were amazing, something that pictures do not do justice to. Then we all walked down and hung out for a bit.
YEsterday I went to buy my train ticket to Valencia. HEather and I walked to the station. I speak very very little spanish and its pretty bad. But normally I can get by with where is...and then act it out. Not so much buying a ticket. I wanted to take the slow train there so I could look around. THe man didn't understand half of what I was saying so the fact that I'm not heading to madrid is good enough. THen we walked to La Rambla, where I met up with Amy. Amy I got lunch, went to the park and caught up. Then we walked to Gaudi's temple that is still under construction. Then up to this beautiful hosptial, inspired by Gaudi. We sat there for a bit and walked back to the la rambla.
I said goodbye to amy and then headed back to my hostel. Stopped at the grocery store, where they play more celine-I think the spanish have a thing for her. And then heather and I watched Glaidiator and the football game as we were both exhausted.
Ok, now i'm going to go and pack my bag. My train leaves in an hour.
Adios!
