So, I'm not partial or anything, but hands down I have the coolest cousins. I had a fantastic time in Budapest. I finished the entire guidebook. I have tons of stories but I'm not going to spell each thing out here. I'll tell you in person if you want.
Monday night, Peter picked me up and we went to this Hungary bar/pub. Not really a bar and not really a pub. But a very cool place where everyone sits around chatting to each other. I used my first "european" bathroom there-a hole in the floor. And when I came back, Peter told me that it wasn't a bathroom, it was a shower. I haven't decided if he was lying to me or not yet. But I loved this bar/pub and hungarian wine is amazing. Tuesday I went to the massive synagog and the Jewish museum. Its the second largest synagog in the world. Then John picked me up and we went drove to szentendre and Visegrad. using Hungarian GPS (which as John demonstrated involves pulling over on the side of the road and asking a Hungarian) . These are two small towns outside Budapest. Szentendre is like being in the 17th century. All these cute little houses. It used to be more artisits and now they just make a bunch of tourist crap. There are some old churches and some odd museums, like the marizpan museum...or the museum of salami. We tried to go into a bunch of places but people just kept getting mad in Hungarian. After we got back we were both exhausted so we went to a movie, saw Street kings. Don't waste your time. It wasn't very good.
So wednesday I went to the house of terror, which a museum that is about the nazis and the communists. Except its mostly about the communists and mostly in Hungarian. It was not that great. Then I met my Dad's cousing Robbie. Now the food in hungary and I do not get along, so I've been avoiding eating it and eating sandwiches. Well Robbie takes me to a fancy all you can eat hungarian buffet. But it was ok, because of the ICE CREAM BUFFET. Anyplace that lets me choose from a bazillion flavors is ok in my books. Wednesday night was the champions league final. Asking me to choose between cheering for Chelseea and cheering for Manchester United is like asking me which arm I want to cut off. I went with John and Gabor's friends and we watched it outside, along the danube. It was great, but really cold. Even for a Canadian.
Thursday I went to the Gellert Baths. budapest is famous for their bath houses, so John dropped me off there. I went swimming in the pool in this picture. I thought it was supposed to be hot, but the pool was freezing! So after one lap I went in a different pool, which was hot, but also full of old men. So I sat there for a bit, felt a bit odd and left. Then I went to the outside pool, which was also freezing. So I took off and headed to buda palace, and spent the rest of the day walking around. Half the battle in travelling is finding a bathroom. Starbucks, McDonalds and hotels are safe bets. But when I was exploring buda I couldn't find any of them. Finally I found a mall, that charged 500 ft (2 €). I would have paid 50 € by then. at 6 peter calls me, tells me to get home Asap as I have tickets to the operatti. This is a hungarian musical. I went with my Uncle, and we just made it in time. The musical is all done in Hungarian, but there are subtittles above it. Except, these were in German. So I didn't have a clue about what the show was about but the dancing was great, and now I've seen can can dancers. Then John's friend was going to pick me up and we were all going to this opening night of a new club on margaritz island. By this time I was so tired I couldn't really stand up, so I passed on the party and went home and slept.
Friday I met up with Nick and Mark from Australia again. We went to buda palace, spent the day exploring and doing stupid things. Everytime a group of tourists take photos, one of us jumps in the background, and does a pose. They have these scottish wigs they bought. Every picture they have has to have the wigs in it. I have pictures and will post them soon. They are hiliarious. Afterwards I met up with John, we got food and went to see Indiana Jones, which is good. Not as good as the first, but still worth seeing. Then we went out with some of his friends. Saturday I went to margaritz island, which is kind of like Stanley park. We explored there and then everyone came over and we had lunch. I had this thing called langosh. If anyone ever gives it to you, eat it and eat alot. It was delicious. Then I left for the airport, where my flight was delayed. I won't fly easyjet again if I can avoid it. To get on the plane, people push and run because seats are choosen first come first serve. And every landing I've ever been in those planes has been really rough. Nick picked me up and i went out with some of friends to the local pub. Now its pissing it down here, which sucks because I wanted to go to Lego land, but that's all outside. Its also freezing. PEter gave me a sweater and a raincoat because I lost all my warm clothes. They are about 50 times to big for me, but at least I'm warm. I don't want to get new stuff here, as I'll probally loose it as well. So one more week and then I'm home. I'm going to visit a friend of mine from primary school and I think go to birmingham to see the cadbury factory. Yes that's right, they have tours of it. Ciao Ciao Jenny
