Hi Everyone, it is now 5pm Friday evening and it is beautiful, the rain cleared by lunchtime and we have had a hot, but good afternoon.
Unfortunately, it was too wet to ride to school this morning, so I shared a tuk with Tok, the roads were not good as they were flooded and it was impossible to see where all the potholes and missing road were. They had turned to red rivers and everyone was trying to drive/ride over the dry patches, and of course, no one likes to give way or wait their turn. It is amusing watching people on motos holding their umbrella up and tuks closed in with plastic walls. Luckily by the time we went we were abe to have the sides open a bit.
The river level had risen about a foot, so if we have the same amount tonight it will probably flood in places, particularly around school.
The school grounds had a few inches of water so the frogs thought they were in heaven, their croaking drowned out the sound of everything else, and listening to one toad, which had a sort of loud guffaw was really amusing and making everyone laugh. When we walked through the wate,r frogs were jumping everywhere, mating or laying spawn. At one point Bunlong saw me looking so came to try and catch me one, lI am so pleased he didn't, but I'm sure many families will have frog and rice for their dinner tonight. Poor unsuspecting frogs! Many of them are so adept at catching them, they might skinned and stuck on the fire and bbq or put with skin on one, or put into their soup/broth type pot.
Apparently it had rained for much of the night, so many children and their families would not have had much sleep, due to the noise if they have a galvenise type roof, or getting wet, if that, or the walls leak. Walking around their home and the lanes to school would not be pleasant, so they stop at home. However, as it dries they gradually stroll into school and the numbers rise. Most of the afternoon's lot came.
Tok, from Japan has just left to return home and thinks this will have been his last time as he has found everything very difficult.
We are down to three vols for a few days, Antonia who was here last year and New Zealander, Rache, as five others have left during the week. At Grace House we have two vols from different organisations, one UK and one from Belgium.
Last night we went to a very noisy quiz night, they are run regularly for ex pats, vols and tourists to raise money for a different NGO each week. We did well last night, but I don't think I'm going to tonight's one as next week I think is for Grace House.
Today I had to make my thumb print and signature on a document that set out a lady's loan agreement, two from GH people and one from the lady herself.
We're meeting the staff from where I work for a drink tonight, but I will be back earlier than the youngsters!
'My Dog' is still about, but was too late for lunch today, goodness knows what happened to her internal clock, when she arrived she was scouting for food. She did stop and listen to me when I explained how important it is to be on time for meals. If nothing else I entertain the Khmer staff.
Today the families who receive their rice fortnightly came to collect their 5kg entitlement. The people who receive it monthly have it delivered to the door. The one lady also asked for a new mossie net as she hadn't got enough for her family. Grace House recently gave every family one new one, the old ones will become fishing nets as the water becomes more extensive.
No plans for the weekend as yet, but I do fancy a swim at some point, there is a new place people are frequently so I may try there.
I'm going to try and load my photos now, they are supposed to show a wet Siemp reap and environs. Some of them are of, the preparing for the mushroom house, but I forgot to look today to see if all the pots are now in situ - wait for the next instalment!
Those preparing for school have a great last weekend and enjoy.
Take care, love to all, J x
7 pm The lightning display started about 30 mins ago and now there is absolutely torrential rain. We were going out to eat but who knows if we'll get a tuk. Or back later as this road floods badly. Oh well, you'll soon hear about it! x
