Day two, the perfect hullabaloo! What a terrif day! After last night's fun and games, 'hello room service, my room is too cold..'... they sent a man to help, he thought I was joking. Okay, I see his point, a ghostly white British girl complaining of the cold while on the equator - however after two calls up and a couple extra duvets later bed was perfectly snuggly and ready for a long (well needed) sleepies! Also insert waking at 3am to banging - the casual service works at 3am...?! Kate, my roomie, and I chose to do what most do in this situation - recite Michael MacIntyre and giggle our way through. Finally back to sleep and hello(!), a different type of banging - at our door! We'd slept through the alarm, so a rushed start to day two, but how utterly superb it was!
A speedy shower later we were walking down to the docks to catch a boat to one of the tropical islands. We enter into the jetty hall to find a dozen booths side by side with Borneon locals shouting, waving tickets trying to win our business. All offering the same service, mum of the group, Sarah, worked her bartering magic and won us a brilliant deal, chocs away! The proceeding twenty minutes were quite the adventure, life jackets on and boy did he give the 70Yamaha a good going, and it would appear the other boats venturing out had the same speedy ethos. Health and safety out the window, each floater for himself, and if there's a gap he's sure going to go for it, soon to pull up to the closest I have been to paradise! Clear turquoise water, tropical fish of all colours, including the shark (small felt-tip fish pushing 15cm) that brushed my leg, golden white sand and blue skies that blended into the ocean horizon.
The day was spent sunning, sun-creaming, sploshing, splashing, swimming and snaking our way through the jungle land. Mr. three foot monitor lizard crossed our path, he was quite the whopper, a few of his little brothers and hermit crabs were also spotted. We were given a science lesson as a baby coconut fell to our feet, which was soon (with my best american-football throw) returned to the sea. I'm hoping it makes a new coconut island, named Jen.
We have been ever so blessed with the weather, God has shone his favour on us in a big way. We left the shore of Kota Kinabula, which was later a flood in the monsoon season rain, moving around the now distant coastline, clearing up as we were on the boat home. The far mountain was thick in rain with lightening offering a sporadic, clouded glow. We strolled back in the sunshine still drop free, through the shopping centre and as we reached the door the heavens opened. What favour, what a treat!!
The skyies are now dark and time for dinner as this belly is rumbling big style so supper and induction meeting (the do's and dont's for Borneo - all of which we've probably already done!) and sleepies for our early flight to my new home top share with the orangutans for the next 7weeks - Sandakan forests of Borneo. Dream come true. Toodaloo!! Prayers and love x
