Here I am! Reporting from a hotel lobby in Kota Kinabalu, and boy have I several sevens for you...
seven o'clock (GMT) up-and-at-them, report to Heathrow T4 check in at 9am.
seven something thousand miles (two flights worth)
seven hours time difference (and a pocket full of jet lag)
seven malaysian ringgit (around 1.60) for fries and sprite (very cultural)
seven o'clock to meet for our welcome dinner (let's hope it's not fish!!)
and seven days until I start work with the orang-utans for I am a hazard to them until I prove I am lergie free.
I fear however I cannot pin the blame of my dizziness onto the maths. I'm looking at the 30+ weather, the super jet lag and the series of pills (malaria, travel sickness, paracetamol) that I've popped today. Oh, and one must remember to brush their teeth in bottled water, apparently the local stuff cannot be trusted. That's nurses' nightmare.
Having spent the day (and yesterday!) travelling, I have now met with the 11 others on my project, ranging from my age upwards to 'mature' volunteers, each passionate about orang-utans alike. Having walked around the town and sent my hooter into overdrive with the overpowering stench of fresh fish, I now write to you in 'rest' time before we meet for our welcome dinner. I'm going for the endurance run, if I break now and nap I know Morley's sleeping til sunrise - how antisocial.
On the matter of antisocial, throughout the journey to our hotel, the taxi driver insisted on giving us the alternative guide to Borneo;
don't eat the fruit then drink beer your stomach physically explodes,
don't always trust drivers as they're likely to drink drive - but rest assured if caught they're in big troubs,
malaysians are big on capital punishment
and my personal favourite, bringing a whole new perspective on head-hunting... we were given insights into the native tribes living on the south coast of the island, who are active man-eaters.
I, nominated to ride shotgun by the rest of the group found this and the faces of the others quite entertaining, alas no tip for you mr.taxi man!
Oh, tomorrow are taking a boat trip to one of the tropical islands and potentially snorkeling, which despite my fear of fish is mega exciting. However I must run before the 30+ sends me also into the antisocial spectrum with severer BO issues. So shower, dinner, SLEEP!
Toodle-pip, love and prayers. Morley xx
