David and I were woken up to the sound of Howler monkeys right outside our window around 5 am (3 am CA time). We were tired after only about 4 hours sleep, but it was a neat wake up call.
We woke up a little later on, had coffee with Eva in bed and then later when Margo was up, we all had eggs, toast and blended fruit and ice drink for breakfast. Then we headed for the beach. The weather was on the windy side, but really warm and humid. We were able to take the approx. 1 minute walk down a little dirt road to the beach. David immediately headed out for the surf. Margo, Eva and I hung at the beach. We were instantly amazed at the abundance of fantastic shells. Quickly our favorite to search for became the coined, "Unicorn Horn" shells (appropriate considering Eva's current fascination with My Little Pony). We had a great time wading into the water, collecting shells and watching David surf. I took Eva in the water for awhile but felt tired out by a bit of undertoe and so then Margo took her in as well and she had a blast. The water this day was probably about 78 degrees, but had a bit of what's called red tide in it, so it was not perfectly clear, but still lovely. Because the wind got a little annoying, Margo, Eva and I made our way past "the Rock" and around the point to an area of the beach that was more protected from the wind and had a little shade from some trees. The shells were different here, which is so strange since it is literally a 2 minute walk around the bend from where we were. There was also a lot of cool coral to collect. David finished up his surf and then joined us. He took Eva out in the water for awhile and then we decided to head out to get some lunch. Since we still didn't have our rental car, we had to walk about 10 minutes to lunch at **** s. Beer was warm, so we stuck to fruit smoothies and water. The food was ok. After lunch we made the walk back home; we were pretty tired and full from lunch. I decided to talk a nap, as did Margo; David and Eva hung out and played. After quiet time, we followed the lead of our awesome neighbors, Freda and Tom and dog Ringo (the Sea Weiner) down to the beach for a sunset walk. After we returned from the walk, it was time for dinner. Since we didn't have food to make dinner at home, and no car, we were faced with making the 12-15 minute walk to El Huerto for wood-fired pizza. Freda, our awesome host, saved the day (because of Eva the tired 4-year-old) and drove us to El Huerto. This restaurant was awesome. All outside dining, lit up with white lights and candlelight. We ordered 2 delicious salads and 2 delicious pizzas and some delicious Chilean (chilled!) wine. As we were coming to a close on our dinner, amazingly, Freda showed up to check on us! We bought her a glass of wine and she sat down and joined us. When we were done, she drove us back home, she saved the day. At the end of a fun, but long first day in CR, she made it so much easier for us to enjoy our time and deal with our tired little one. Thank you Freda!
