THINGS THAT GO 'CRUNCH' IN THE NIGHT
Day 67: Koh Tao
Last night saw me get a much better night's sleep, even though the banging on the roof continued. And I'm sure animals are the cause as they keep laughing after it hits the roof. The only thing that really woke me up was at about 5am when Jen was trying to plug her iPhone in to charge it and all I could hear was her scratching round trying to find the adapter hole. It was only when I awoke at the second time of this happening, half an hour later, to realise Jen was still asleep. Whatever it was sounded really close but I was too tired to figure it out.
We strolled down to the restaurant shortly after nine and had the most amazing view for a breakfast we've ever had, right out across the bay. And from our high up seats about three levels above the sea we watched loads and loads of fish all eating the scraps that the waiters were throwing over the edge. And the sun was blazing hot already, so it looked like another good day of basking was on the cards.
We spent a good four hours on the beach, reading and chilling out only interrupted by a bit of snorkelling. Although, my mask kept leaking because I need a shave. Still I was able to explore a couple of different reefs. It's amazing how quick the seascape changes when you're focussing on a few fish under the water. You turn around and there's about 10 different fish staring you in the face inquisitively, which can initially freak you out, until you realise they're small and harmless.
I went back to the room at one point to get my sunglasses and the Pringles (that would serve as a light lunch) that were next to Jen's side of the bed. It wasn't until I was half way back down towards the beach that I realised that something must have been nibbling at the cardboard tube and the plastic lid. Then it clicked. That was the noise that woke me up in the night - something gnawing at the tin of Pringles that were right next to Jen. I decided I won't tell her until we leave on Tuesday morning. I've had to tell her that the cleaners must have thrown them away. Poor cleaners.
At about four-ish we decided it was time for a beverage of the alcoholic nature and a snack to keep us going, given the Pringles had 'mysteriously disappeared'. This lead us into the early evening where we were had a lovely meal under the moonlit sky. The hotel's restaurant has a platform which overhangs the sea as it laps up against the rocks. This hadn't been open as yet, but we're now entering the high season so I guess they've decided it's time. It has the traditional Thai floor cushions so you can sit on the floor and relax whilst eating dinner. These are the kind of days we dreamt about ending this trip on.
