We have been back in Brisbane for just over two weeks now and we are beginning to see some progress in our hunt for somewhere to work and to somewhere to live for the next few months.
We are currently at the Newmarket campsite that we stayed at before and our first few days were a bit of a struggle as we had a few tent issues. We arrived to be told that we would have to stay on one of the unpowered sights for the first night, which wasn't a problem in itself but when the time came for us to move sights we got the big tent up as quickly as possible and threw the fly sheet over the top, only to find that we had sprung a leak and were taking in water quicker than the Titanic (but at least we didn't have that Canadian freak singing!). Somewhere along the way the two plastic 'skylights' had managed to tear and there were now several holes in the roof that was letting in the rain that was pouring down. After a dash to the nearest camping store and the purchase of a huge tarpaulin and some ropes, we had a makeshift roof and the rain finally stayed outside of the tent, but this did little to keep us warm as the weather gradually took a turn for the worse over the next few days.
With this extra motivation to get ourselves into something a bit more permanent (and brick based) we set about scouring the local papers and internet sites for an apartment to call home for the next three months. We soon discovered that most of the places that were available for short-term renting were looking at a minimum of a six month letting period, so this was our first major change of plan as our proposed stay changed from three to six months.
By the end of the first week we had made one more slight home alteration with the purchase of a lovely new electric heater, as the weather was turning colder and colder as the winter months set in and at one point it had rained constantly for almost three days and the campsite was beginning to resemble the local swimming pool!
Over the last couple of days we have at last managed to create a shortlist of viable apartments in various parts of the city and we have a few viewings coming up, so hopefully we will be able to get into somewhere warm and dry very soon. The job prospects are looking more positive too, even if the roles we are thinking about are only temporary until we can get something better, but at least after the first couple of weeks back in the city things are starting to turn in our favour.
