Our first full day in Brisbane didn't exactly get off to the best start as we awoke to find that the tent had flooded during the night, and the bed and anything else that was left on the floor was now soaked! So the first thing that we had to do was try to get everything out of the tent and find somewhere for it all to dry off - not the easiest task when it's still drizzling and there's nowhere dry to put anything!? After we had finally dried off most of the inside of the tent with our towels, tea towels and any other cloths that we had lying around, we headed to the nearest camp shop to buy some more pegs and get the tent sorted out properly so that we could remain dry for the rest of week. Luckily, the rest of the day was considerably less eventful.
On Monday morning we moved a bit further south to Main Beach, just outside Surfers Paradise, as we were meeting up with Elaine again before she flew back home. The campsite was just across from the beach and it was good to see sand on a beach again, instead of the sand and dust of the farm, and our spirits were instantly lifted from the day before. Once we had secured the tent under some shelter we picked Elaine up and continued on to Wet 'N' Wild water park to check out the new rides that had opened since we were there with Toyah and Stuart some five months before. Thankfully, the weather had improved considerably as well and we spent the day in the sun getting nicely crisp. There were a couple more tube rides including one that was completely in the dark, and a couple of huge slides with near vertical drops that were especially nerve racking!
In the evening we ventured into the main centre in Surfers to sample a few of the local beverages and it was just like being in Ibiza or Magaluf or any other number of European 18-30's holiday destinations. After we had managed to get some Irish stew from Lansdowne Road we headed along the strip to check out a few bars, only to be turned away from our first port of call because neither Andrew nor Elaine had any ID on them. Kinda ironic as we had a combined age of over 100!! We did however, find ample libation and comfy seats in The Avenue and to top it all off, they had SkySports on behind the bar showing the footy highlights!
Yesterday we had a leisurely stroll around the shops in the morning checking out all the clothes that we couldn't really justify buying just yet and having a good poke around the Warner Bros store. Why is it that whenever funds are running a little low, every shop has a sale on and is full of stuff you like and cafes and restaurants doing huge fry up breakfasts are on every corner? We returned to camp just after noon so that we could get some beach time while we could and spent the afternoon lazing around on the beach and braving the cold of the water - and this time around we stayed within the yellow flags! There was even time to head to the cinema and catch a movie last night before heading back to the tent for a well-earned rest.
We are now back in Brisbane again to potter around for the last few days of our break, before heading back to the farm at the weekend.
