So I´ll try and quickly catch you up on our quick trek from Merida, Mexico to Caye Caulker, Belize...
From Mexico City we flew to Merida where we only spent one night. We now realise how fortunate we were to find such a wonderful hostel. It was called Nomadas, a cheap night in a dorm room but the place had a beautiful pool! It was tucked in the back of the hostel, with plenty of palms and hammocks. After spending some time in many other hotels I wish we had spent more time here relaxing by the pool. Corey and I didn´t stay long in Merida so we didn´t see much of the town. We bussed out the next day to Tulum.
We landed a decent hostel in Tulum. It had a kitchen and lots of hammocks. We loved the fact that we could cook our own meals, it´s so much cheaper! I was expecting hostels all through Central America but since we left Mexico we havent come across any. ( We have been staying in hotel dorms which are cheap but have no kitchen) We spent two nights in Tulum. Our first night there was pouring with rain, I believe it was affected by the hurricane that passed by Peurto Vallarta. Our hostel had a shuttle bus to the ruins and beach nearby, so we hopped on and headed to the beach for our second day. We rented some snorkeling gear and spent the day snorkelling and lounging in hammocks. Our hostel was quite busy for the time we were there, we met some interesting people and actually ran into quite a few Canadians who were travelling together. It was quite a comforting feeling!
Corey and I left our hostel in the morning and headed to Belize with one other person we met. Evan is a forest firefeighter during the summer months and went to school at UVIC. We split up for a day so he could check out San Pedro, we met up on Caye Caulker the day after. We also ended up running into the group of 3 Candians we met in Tulum, we spent the day with everyone and now keep in touch via facebook. Who knows maybe we will run into them again along the way. Anyway, Caye Caulker was beautiful. It was relaxing and all the people on this island were so happy and kind. The people here were genuinley interested in our lives and wanted to chat, they did not expect a tip out of it which is hard to come by in Guatemala. Corey and I did a snorkelling tour here, as you saw from the photos. It was great! We got to swim with sharks, stingrays, and even saw a manatee! The next day we parted from our friends and took off to Maya Mountain Research Centre.
I hope everyone is enjoying the blog! We fell quite behind for a while and now we have been trying to catch ya up on the most recent events!!
