Happy New Year!
I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and New Years! Corey and I enjoyed our Christmas on Omeptepe Island in Nicaragua. We spent about a 5 nights there and splurged on a few very nice rooms. And when I say splurge I mean $30 a room. On our second day on Ometepe, which was the 22nd I believe, Corey and I rented a dirtbike and explored most of the island. The roads were quite safe to drive on and the scenery was breath taking. The isalnd of Ometepe is made up of two large volcanoes, we we able to fully drive around one volcano and about half of the other, the road got a little bumpy and a dirtbike doesn't have the most comfortable back seat, so we headed back to our hotel for the night.
The next day we made our way to the other side of the island where we spent most of our time at Hacienda Merida. It was a cute hostal which was right on the lake, we were able to watch a beautiful sunset everynight over the lake. It was also quite secluded, there weren't many towns on the southern side of the island. On the 24th Corey and I rented kayaks and kayaked to San Ramone which was where the enterance to a beautiful waterfall was. From there the hike up to the waterfall was around 2 hours, I cant quite remember. The fall was thin but VERY high. We took a quick dip in the freezing cold water under the fall and then had lunch. That night we moved from our dorm room to a private room with our own bathroom and a huge hammock! We were looking forrward to a delicious meal, I was hoping and dreaming of a full Christmas Turkey dinner, with stuffing, mashed potaoes, yams, vegetables, gravy, cranberries, and wine. BUT did we get it? Nope. We had a buffet dinner which consisted of Kraft Dinner, rice, beans, and a piece of beef which was litteraly tougher than a piece of rubber. It was so sad, haha but we didn't go hungry, we had seconds of KD and settled to our room. And, I am still dreaming of that turkey dinner. Christmas day we spent relaxing, swimming, and skyping before the power went out.
On the 26th, Corey and I set off with a guide and another couple to hike Volcano Maderas. It was a steep four hour hike to the top in a very lush green forest. The wind was quite strong at the top which made for a very cold lunch break, we also were unable to see anthying at all because we were in the middle of the clouds. On our trek down the clouds began to clear and we were able to see almost the entire island looking towards Volcano Conception, along with the lake. The hike down took about 3 hours and was incredibly hard on the knees. When we arrived back to the hostal we hopped in the lake and srubbed our shoes clean, our clothes along with our shoes were completely covered in mud.
On the day of the 27th we had planned to leave for Costa Rica but decided we were desperatly needing to wash our clothes, which is an all day event. We hand washed ALL our or clothing and hung them to dry. We made the mistake of hanging our very stinky socks (even after being srubbed and re scrubbed) in between all of our clothing, needless to say, all of our clothes reaked of stinky feets! We could only deal with that for about another week and half when we decided we really needed to take them in to get washed. The day after when everything was dry we left Ometepe and headed for Costa Rica.
I am running out of time on this computer, we have a line-up waiting for us to finish on the computer in our hostal so I cannot fully catch everyone up to date. We are currently in Lima, Peru and are on our way to Huaraz, Peru tonight and I will finish blogging there. We are safe and miss everyone! I hope everyone is well and we hope to skype our families soon.
Beunos Tardes!
