Day Four
A change of plan over breakfast took us to Bandelier National Monument north of Santa Fe. But not before Jean parted with some of her hard earned cash to an 85 year old Native American woman called Peggy who sold her some of her hand made jewellery in the hotel lobby.
A very scenic drive with constant 360 degree panoramic vistas took us to the Tsankawi Trail. An arduous 2.5 hour hike rewarded us with a close encounter with some ancient pueblo ruins, some interesting species of cacti and some magnificent views of the Sangre de Cristo, Jemex and Sandia mountains.
The trail involved climbing three ladders to take us to the mesa top. Duncan joked that any encounters with rattle snakes would have involved us in a real life game of snakes and ladders and although we saw a number of lizards, the rattlesnakes left us well alone.
The highlight of the hike was seeing cave dwellings and a number of 600 year old Petroglyphs.
Post hike took us to Chimayo to see a 19th century church where miracles on the lines of Lourdes are alleged to have taken place. Jean managed to get a bag of holy soil which Peggy had told her about.
Lunch was at a typical New mexican restaurant serving Mexican food. A first for us was a glass of Prickly Pear Pink lemonade which was delicious.
Late afternoon found us back at the hotelfor a quick siesta before going out for our anniversary dinner at La
Fonda.
