Up early for breakfast and long drive to Acoma Pueblo the oldest continuously inhabited community in North America and one of the must dos of the trip - especially since we had visited the Hopi on 3rd Mesa Arizona on a previous trip.
Long journey which felt like we were driving to the edge of civilisation but we were well rewarded. The Pueblo looms 370 feet above the desert floor and for 200 years has served as the spiritual homeland for the Acoma people. Around 30 people still live on the mesa and preserve the traditional way of life with no running water or electricity.
Our guide was really helpful and quite a character - he took great pride in making sure we knew that many of the Acoma people had only pretended to embace Catholicism to keep the Spanish invaders happy and that there was a Kiva under the alter of the church. Religious ceremonies still take place in the 13 Kivas on Acoma and twice a year the Pueblo is open to visitors for feast days.
The photos don't do this place justice - its very special.
Although tired when we got back to Santa Fe, we managed a walk around the Plaza after dinner. It was buzzing with music and entertainment with loads of side stalls..........good fun and what a contrast.
