We slept in and after eating breakfast, we settled down by the computer to figure what we're going to do for the 3 days between Italy and Spain later in our trip. We ended up spending around 4 hours going through different plans, each time foiled by expensive or booked-out hostels. With frustration setting in, we finally decided on 3 nights in Marseille, France. We set out to explore Naples, our map highlighted by the receptionist with all of the main attractions. We walked through the unappealing streets eventually making it down to the sea. It was a rather hot day and we were considering going for a swim when we noticed the large amounts of trash floating in the water and changed our minds. There was a big castle jutting out into the ocean that we climbed to the top of and gazed out upon the city and the water, but feeling rather unimpressed the whole time. We trekked back up through the narrow streets of the Latin quarter and searched for some of the pizzerias recommended on our map but had no luck in finding them. We walked the main streets, nothing more than filthy alleys, and then ordered pizzas from the restaurant we visited yesterday and returned to the hostel. The rest of the night passed much like the last, drinking, chatting with fellow travelers and watching the Blues Brothers. I can confidently say that Naples is now my least favorite city I've been to and I hope I never have to return to its trash-ridden streets again in my life. Pompeii was definitely worth a visit, but honestly Mt Vesuvius should erupt again and wipe this miserable city off the face of the planet.
