We were hoping to visit 'Rum Cay', but Paul was worried about the limited anchorage with the adverse currents wind and swell, so we cruise a greater distance to the island of San Salvador.
All of these Islands are relatively uninhibited, they have narrow band of shallow water in close to shore, with a lot of fringing reef. The water depth plunges in some cases to as deep as 3-4,000 meters.
We had cruised at 8 knots to reserve fuel. This is ideal for fishing and as we came to several drop offs we saw several game boats trolling near San Salvador. We had no luck this time.
San Salvador is officially designated as Christopher Columbus' first land fall in the new world in October 1492.
We anchored off Cockburn town in Long Bay, which has a large Club Med. resort around the point from us. It is situated on a magnificent white sandy beach with beautiful turquoise water. The town is very small and looks quiet uninteresting. The Island is 21 Kms long and 8 Kms wide. It has beautiful white beaches and deep drop offs close to the land.
The English settled the Island in the
17 th Century and today the population is about 1000.
It is renowned for scuba diving here. This we discovered to be truenwhen Jon, Paul and MB simply swam off the back of the boat to a 40 meter drop off with a significant rock wall. There were about 1 dozen large groupers who were very friendly swimming right up to your face. There were 4 Bronze Whaler sharks that circled close and effortlessly. There were also many types of other fish, beautiful purple ferns and coral.
We did not venture on shore to the museum dedicated to Columbus and the Lucyan people who lived here. The girls did yoga and Dennis just relaxed reading his book. JB cleaned everyone up at quoits and after dinner we had a film. A beautiful day.
