Only one hour from Saint Martin is Anguilla. We wait for the 11 am bridge opening at Simpson Bay. We troll all the way but catch nothing. We arrive in time for lunch at Prickly Pear Island. On first appearance it is pretty barren, but when we round a corner in the tender, we find a beautiful white beach with two cafe bars. Only 'Johnnos' is open today but no clients at this end of the season.
After lunch we go snorkelling, it was supposed to be very good, but it now it looks like the reef has been all but destroyed by hurricanes. However, JB spots a moray eel on a good coral bombie just off the main reef. There are also small colourful fish but not much coral left.
It is too rolley to stay the night here so we head across to the sheltered bay simply called 'Road', at Sandy Point. This is a great bay with white sandy beaches. It is surreal as it has many shipwrecks littering the waters edge and large sandstone cliffs that have collapsed, we assume from hurricanes.
We venture ashore to see the town, there is nothing but some beach bars with great island music.
We enjoy watching the sun go down with a rum punch at 'johnno's'. Unfortunately they had just wound up their jazz evening which is on every sunday. However, at 'Sam's' next door the reggae band is in full swing.
Anguilla is British with 90% of the permanent population descended from the African slaves.
Tomorrow we leave early for a 90 nautical mile crossing to the BVI's, (British Virgin Islands).
