So, these past couple days in Bonn have been awesome. I have already been on a tour of historic Bonn and have explored most of the city by foot with friends from school. The city is very small but its really nice and fun to explore. Yesterday I was able to visit Beethovenhaus (Beethoven's house). It was really cool to be able to walk through the home of Beethoven and see where he grew up and lived for the first half of his life. The house had many pictures and items that he used while he was alive, including two pianos and a violin that he played. It was really cool. The transportation in Germany is really convenient and pretty efficient. I can take the underground subway or the bus to school which is about 15 minutes outside of the main city. I live in a little suburb called Tannenbusch. The Bonn University is beautiful. We were told yesterday that before it became the University it was the palace of a king who didn't really use it so he turned it in to the University of Bonn. Pretty cool huh? Anyway, my classes aren't inside the palace. They are actually in a building called the AIB (Akademie fur Internationale Bildung) next to the University. Even the AIB has a cool history though. It used to be the house of a duchess who used one of the main offices as her shoe closet and then after WWII it was a hotel for a few years and then we found out that if it were to ever be torn down you would find Roman ruins underneath it!! Its a really cool little building with only about 4 classrooms -just enough for our classes. Another cool thing is that right behind the AIB and next to the University is the Rhine River. It is huge! But its really cool to be so close to it.
In other news, I've been trying to really experience Germany and German life so I've tried a few new things since I've been here. One being deer! Yes poor little Bambi was my lunch on Wednesday. :) It actually wasn't that bad. It tasted like beef. haha. I also had my first German beer. It wasn't that bad either. I don't really drink beer (ever) but this wasn't so bad - way better than American beer according to others.
Anyway, I am going on my first excursion to Eifel on Sunday. We are going to a famous monastery, a few museums, on a hike, and to a mass where Gregorian chants are still sung! Its going to be awesome and I am really excited.
Its a little difficult to upload all my pictures onto this site so if you are interested in seeing more pictures just email me at [email protected]. I have all my pictures on Kodak Gallery so if you email me I will send you the album(s). Until next time!
Tschüss!
