Monday
We had a lovely light meal last night in one of the waterfront pubs – very popular spot and we had to wait half and hour. The time passed fairly quickly with the help of a red wine or two,. Both had seafood soup which was yummy, then a fish cocktail.
We had a good nights sleep in a charming B & B right on the waterfront with a lovely young couple as our hosts. They had both been working and living in Chch for a while and had come back home to Scotland and bought the B & B. So far they are making a great job of it. The breakfast was the best yet and the attention to detail great. Fresh fruit salad (1st time) and then I had scrambled eggs with a generous portion of local smoked salmon – yum.
A quick walk around the town then on our way for the longest journey yet. Left Ullapool and followed dozens of lochs thru the Western Highlands and spectacular mountains. Skirted around Inverness (been there) and made our way to Loch Ness which we followed for quite a long time. Stopped at Fort Augustus and had the treat of watching several boats negotiate 5 locks on the Caledonian Canal – a fantastic engineering feat linking several lochs together from the Western Isles right through to the North Sea. It was absolutely fascinating.
On the road again – stopped for lunch and had the same old mediocre offerings of Panini, Baked Spud, Toasties etc. All dress up in different wording, but basically the same. Thank goodness for the good breakfasts is all I can say.
The trip was long but the scenery spectacular although we did strike rain on the last leg which made it a bit unpleasant. Our B & B in Callander is providing us with the smallest room yet, but for only one night what the heck.
We are a little bit out of town, but will walk the 15 mins in and find a restaurant soon (once we have finished our red wine!!)
Love to all,
xxx
