J: Just one view since driving from Franz Joseph to Greymouth on the west coast to catch the train across to Christchurch. But they're fixing a tunnel at the mo so actually it was a convoy of three coaches for a couple of hours until Arthur's Pass then the train.
We preferred the coach to the train in the end because we were in a carriage full of chinese all taking loudly, playing cards and toing and froing to the buffet. My solution was Wedg's ipod turned up realloy loud. Wedg managed to read his book. We saw 1,000s of merino sheep and lambs. Merino products are everywhere and we were told we'd be warm on the heli hike if we had some merino - which we didn't. Actually it was ok with layers and the concentration of walking and leaping in crampons!
We haven't bought anyone merino for Christmas as yet! It is really odd seeing decorations in shops - as if they're pretending. Apparently the Europeans have a Christmas day meal and presents on July 25th too when it's winter. It's so funny trying to work out which side of the coach to sit too to avoid the sun with north facing being the warm side! And I still might film the water going down the plughole. We want to see the stars sometime if we can and spot the Southern Cross rather than the Plough.
Our drive to Greymouth was spicktacular but we're used to mountains now so almost forgot to mention them! Unless you have a wideangle lens you can't capture ithe 180+ degrees of scenery you're stunned by.
Off to look for food again - we'll weigh a stone more by the end. And we might buy another case for presents because we think because we came from USA we're entitled to two each. Same allowance.
