W: Hello all. We are in Wellington for the night. Sorry no photos but we are using the computer in the hotel and can't load any, hopefully we can at the next place we stay.
We went whale watching in Kaikoura saw four or five - not sure about one it looked like a big log in the distance to me however we were assured it was one of them so we raced over to it but it had dived. There were also loads of dolphins and an albatross so it was a really special day.
We then drove up to our next stop which was a cottage attached to the Herzog winery. It was right among all the vines and was really fantastic. No TV, phones or internet. We had dinner in their restaurant which is apparently one of the top three in NZ. As we were staying in the cottage we got the fantastic table overlooking the gardens and pond. We arrived and the weather was a bit showery but it cleared for the most lovely sunset over the vinyard. It could not have been any nicer. The meal was 7 taster courses and lasted three hours with a different wine for each. Thankfully not a full glass.
The next day we did a private all day wine tour in the Marlborough area starting off in a brilliant small organic family run place Te Ware Ra, where the owner spent ages telling us how the wines are made and his methods as we walked through his vines, glass in hand. We had lunch at another winery and finished off at Cloudy Bay... just because we could really!
Today we flew over to Wellington on north island and spent the afternoon at the Te Papa national museum, again another treat. It has their maori history as part of it. Tomorrow we fly up to Lake Taupo with no plans of what we will do there not even sure what the hotel will be like.. if it all works like it has so far it will be wonderful.
